Jukebox Project 99% finished (updated 4-21-07)
« on: March 10, 2006, 12:42:54 pm »
A few weeks ago I decided to build something out of the scrap wood that was left from building my MAME cab, so I ended up building a Jukebox.

Cab dimensions - 19" x 15" x 50"
AMD K7 700MHZ Processor
80 GB HD
640 MB RAM
Creative X-FI soundcard
ATI Rage 32MB Video

18' NEC LCD Touchscreen
Klipsch Promedia 2.1 Speakers

The glowing circle in the front is a party light projector I purchased on Ebay. I guess they sell this same thing at Discovery Channel Stores. The box at the top of the cab is a Green Laser Projector from Extreme Lasers. IT projects 200+ shapes and changes with the music.I picked this baby up for a song on a no reserve auction on Ebay. I also planned on installing a fog machine that I got at Walmart during Halloween, but I am tight on size and the machine sets off my smoke detectors.

What needs to be finished on it is a back door. I ran out of wood and would like to at least cover the monitor and computer parts with it. I also have 2 fans that I will have to install to keep things cool.

There is also enough room in the front underneath the speakers for a 16" Lumin Disk that I will install once I can get the $$ to purchase one.

Anyway, here are the pics. Photos were taken this morning before I left for work so the laser doesn't look too bright. I'll post better pics later.

That's really cool.  I love how you can keep it right next to your nice stuff, and it doesn't stick out.  did your monitor come as a touchscreen, or is it an overlay?  How much did you spend for everything? Nice job!

That's pretty sweet.  I have considered doing the same sort of thing, but I will probably never get to it.  Too many projects already. :)

Nice little unit, nothing like a big touchscreen.

I picked this LCD touchscreen on Ebay for $250. It's very responsive.

I love it! Looks great dude. I got some 2.1 EV speakers and a computer that would be great to put in a dedicated cab - what jukebox software?

I'm designing my jukebox now. And, by designing, I mean I'm throwing around ideas in my head. Did you do much planing or did you do minimal measuring and then start cutting? I'm more of a start cutting and nailing wood together kind of guy.

What about the color? Leftover paint or is black the color you wanted to use?

What I like about yours is it's small footprint. I like that. I'm using a CRT so I'll be building something a little bigger.

The software I am using is SK Jukebox. I love how it works with a touch screen. As for the paint I started out with Satin Black enamel that was left over from another cab, but I ended up not having enough, so I ended up using Semi-Gloss black Latex for the last 3 coats.

I kinda had an idea of what I wanted it to look like in my head and just started cutting. I almost didn't have any room to secure the monitor,  but it worked out in the end.

When I first mentioned building a Jukebox, my wife wasn't too hip on the idea, but after I finished it she can't stop using it.

Wow this looks terrific. I returned to the forum only yesterday ready to begin my next project (finished a mame cab a year ago) and your design is exactly what I had in mind.

I see you've posted rough cab dimensions above in your first post, but I wonder if I could beg you to post some more exact dimensions? Like on the side panels, I assume the long side (the back side) is 50" but whats the length of the smaller side of that piece (the one towards the front?)

I'm sitting here drawing out what you did trying to put dimensions to everything and figure out the angle of the screen etc. Any other dimensions would help me out immensely even if they're rough.

Thanks for posting this, would love to see more shots and or progress if you work on it anymore.

Cheers!  ;D

The piece of wood that I used was exactly 48" high, but I used castors. and recessed the bottom shelf. The actual height is more like 49" than 50". As for the angle of the screen. I'll measure the front pieces when I get home.

Hey there. I took one of your pictures and started filling in dimensions. As you see there are two dimensions left that I would love to get ahold of. Don't worry about the angle, as I can figure that out if I get the other two distances. Thanks again for posting this, I hope you don't mind me ripping you off so blatantly.  ;D

The top is 6.5" and the middle piece is 34.5".

Can't wait to see photos of it when you are finished.

Has this juke gotten the last 5% done?

Figured I'd open it back up since there's gonna be interest in it again

Yes indeed. I loved this jukebox. I built one also - since I went with a CRT - my model is quite a bit bigger. If I did it again - I'd shell out the loot for the LCD.

I am shelling out the loot for a LCD. Found a 15-inch ELO for 150 brand new. I hope to pick it up this weekend.

Im just wanting to see a few more photos of this project with better lighting. I'm interested to see how he finished the speaker grills. I see the holes during construction, but want to know how he finished them up.  ;D

I second your request ;D

I'd like to see how the speaker holes were finished and how the monitor frame was finished.

It's about 98% done. I ran out of wood and never made a back door for it, but it has worked out well without one so far. I think I am going to use a piece of peg board for the back door instead.

I have also the added a 16" green Lumindisk on the front.

I didn't realize this anyone wanted an update on my project until today.

The speaker grills are just the grills that came with the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speaker system that is in it. I just cut the holes so that the speakers fit in nice and snug, then secured them in with some spare black CPO that I had lying around.

The monitor is being held in by 2 rubber bungees screwed to the wood.

I'll have photos of the cab in better lighting tomorrow. I shot the older images in low light so you could see the laser and the light show coming out of the front. I'll make sure you can see details in the next set of images.

This is an awesome project.  Do you get a nice sound out of it (enough to fill a room) since the speakers are so close together?  Just curious...

Nice work!!

THe sound is better than I expected. It has the ability to be hooked up to my home theater system, but I have never found the need to. It totally fills the room and more with these speakers. The room it is in has huge vaulted ceilings and the music sounds good from wherever you are in the room.

For outdoor parties we have a pair of the outdoor wireless Brookstone speakers. That way people can select the music in the house and if they go out onto the back porch or on the lawn they can still hear the tunes.

Thanks.  That's really good to know.  I've been thinking about a jukebox project somewhere down the road but I want to be sure it sounds good for parties and stuff.  I'm approximately 3 projects away from starting it!

OK... After weeks of being lazy I finally am posting pics of the green lumin disk that I added to the fint plus an image of the cab with the lights on. So you can see the speakers.

If would like closeups of anything please feel free to ask.

Does that disc change to the music or does it just do what its doing in the photo?

Never mind answered my own question
http://www.epartyunlimited.com/lumin-disk.html

Thats kinda cool. Im looking for some ideas of mine own and I kinda like it..
What size is that disc? I keep finding 6-inch versions, but that thing looks bigger. 16-inch where did you find that one?

I picked it up on Ebay. They can get pretty pricey for the blue ones. I think I paid $55 for this green one.
