I had a carpenter friend who suggested using 1" Lexan (or maybe it was plexi) instead of layering it on top of wood. It's expensive in full sheets, but very strong. -pmc |

I made a coffee table/subwoofer with a plexiglass top. It's a single piece(15" x 36") and only 3/8" thick. I paid 50$ for it, since it's plexiglass. To get it in 3/4" lexan would have easily been over 100$. |

Polycarbonate (Lexan) is often used to build greenhouses. You can get great prices from a greenhouse supplier, although it is usually multi-wall . |
