And they're both very easy to use. |

Based on my recent experience, I'm not convinced that many newer FEs support Win98 well, so you're probably better off going with XP, but that's a shame because 98 would be a better choice and offer better performance IMO. |

First off 500 mhz and 256 megs of ram is NOT enough to run xp well. That is m$'s minimum sys requirements so automatically you increase the mhz to 700-750 and the ram to 512. Sure with various service tweaking you can decrease that number, but quite frankly if you are going to do more than just play mame, you'll find that most of those services you turned off have to be turned back on for a specific app or emu. Service tweaking can only give you an extra boost, not make a machine that shouldn't be powerful enough to run xp magically good enough. Gamexp will only manage to screw up your system do NOT use it. I sure wish people would stop recommending that pos. I can't vouch for nlight so I'll leave that one be. To clarify, while you can run xp in 256 megs of ram and a 500 mhz processor you can't run anything newer than 80's- early 90's era games in mame. Also all you newer emulators, which would be the reason for running xp won't be happy with such low specs. With that being said. Xp is by far the best os out there, period. You have more fe choices, more helper app choices, more emulator choices, more stability, a quicker bootup time and more pc games than any other comparable os. So there is a best os (for this situation... linux/dos users please calm yourselves) but it's really irrelevant. If your system is fast enough to run xp, run xp, if it's slightly slower run 98se, if it's ancient run dos. End of story. Notice I didn't mention any other oses..... that is purely intentional. Unlesss you have a REALLY good special case excuse, you shouldn't even give oses like linux, beos, win 95, win nt or win2000 (or mac os for that matter) a second thought. They might have other uses, but they are flat out inferior for gaming and essentially useless in the niche-specific emulator cabinet front. In closing please quit asking this question. I layed it all out...... until m$'s next os comes out for us to evaluate this answer will NOT be changing so please, for the love of god do a search on the forums before you ask a question that gets asked a minimum of twice a month. |

Sorry if my question angered you. I did do a search and read those over. I was asking because of the specifics of my system. If you don't like the question you don't have to read it or answer it. Thanks for those who contributed their input. Sorry that I bothered to ask a question on forum... |

All I want the thing to do is run the emulators for arcade games, sega, nes, snes, etc. The "newest" system it would need to handle is n64. No PS1 or anything like that. Please keep in mind when replying that running these emulators is the ONLY thing it will be doing (maybe play video files). No web browsing, no office work, no high end 3D gaming (NBA Live 06, etc), probably no internet connection what so ever. --- End quote --- Nes: FCE Ultra Sega: Kega Fusion Runs 60fps even with SuperScale 75% scanlines Snes: Zsnes N64: UltraHLE, Corn I'm currently building a bartop which will run with an Nlited version of Windows xp. It's a pentium 3 500mhz 128mb of ram. Using Mamewah as a frontend with in game previews. Most of the games run full speed using Fastmame v.71 The only reason I recommended GameXP was because he mentioned it was a gaming only pc. The only thing I know it messes up from experience is Windows update which you can avoid by unchecking the services tweak before you run it. And anyways it always makes a backup everytime you run it so you can undo any changes. I've built alot of PC's for friends and family and GameXP is always the first thing I install. It really gives XP a boost. In fact I used GameXP on this computer about 6 months ago, no problems whatsoever. Hey mikeyv23 don't get offended. If you need any more help, just ask and i'll be happy to help. |
