Competition forces fast food joints to feed us the very cheapest food they can buy and process.  Good burger joints that don't try to compete directly with McDonalds have good food.

Yeah, but I don't go to McDonald's because I want really good food, nor do I expect it.  If I go to McDonald's, it's because I want cheap, quick food, and make the decision to sacrifice quality for that.  Your local bar and grill that sells a thick, juicy burger isn't in competition with McDonald's for your burger business.

You're comparing apples and oranges, IMO.  In fact, when you look at the market that McDonald's actually competes in -- the fast food burger market -- there has been an upswing in quality of food -- Black Angus Burgers at Hardees & Burger King.  They're actually pretty tasty.

If your local grill's burgers start going south, blame the management -- not the market.

OK, pardon the thread hijack...

Without competition in the cell phone business you'd all still be using those bricks the first companies sold years ago. You also have a phone without a camera, mp3 ringtones and all that fancy crap they have in them now.

Competition is ALWAYs good when it comes to technology. As for comparing competition in the spinner world to competition in the fast food world it's like comparing apples to oranges.

haha.. wow, that is weird!  I'm all the time thinking up crazy stuff but I never actually do it.  At one point a was keeping a journal of "inventions" until I started discovering that most of them had already been invented and I just didnt know it.  oh well, glad I've still have my day job  ;D

Competition is only good to consumers in terms of price.
Quality ALWAYS suffers when technology is subjected to competition.

Look at the Betamax vs. VHS issue.
Sony had superior quality, but was forced out of the market because anybody, and everybody, could produce a VHS recorder.
As the lower-quality VHS machines gained marketshare, based solely on price, video stores began reducing the selections available in Beta format.
This started a death spiral, that led to the demise of the superior quality format.

With regard to cell phones, my old analog-only Nokia gave me better reception, with a much better range, than the analog/digital LG that I'm currently using.
I actually had to switch back down from a digital-only phone because I couldn't keep a call going in my house, and couldn't get a call out anywhere that I hunt.
I live right in the geographic center of my town, and only about 1/2 mile from the freeway, BTW.

Now they are talking about eliminating analog completely in the near future, which is going to leave me SOL.
That "advance" is driven by competition.
They can pack more calls into the same bandwidth with digital.
They are offering WORSE service for the same price--so that they can remain "competitive".
There is no regard for the customer, just their own bottom line.

I agree modern mobiles are absolute shite.  I have an old black/white screened crappy Nokia because at least it doesn't crash.  And if I wanted a camera or mp3 player I'd buy one...

Back on topic...I would like to see a push/pull spinner available so this looks like a pretty good start...
