To Save State or Not to Save State - that is the question

I was playing a game of karate champ earlier and I was using the save state function to advance further in the game without actually having to start all over (there is no continue option).

What I'm wondering is who all uses save state? And do you think it ruins the game? Since many times I'm playing a game to beat a score or get past a certain number of levels I'm thinking it may not be a good idea for me.

Does anyone else use save state? I'm thinking about forgetting I know about it. Curious what anyone else thinks...

SirPoonga:

I think it's fine.  Other things can cause you to need to get away form the machine.  It's not like you are running a real arcade and charging people money, then you wouldn;t like that feature :)

I never save because i feel that you can never capture that same feeling or that same rhythm you had when playing. I do have to use pause sometimes because of the wife complaining for me to pick up my socks, take out the trash (ahhh...makes me feel like a kid again) or when I have to grab a beer.

I don't use savestate, because I often quit a game in disgust, only to see guests start it up later all confused about what's going on.

Gh0sty:

sorry i have never understud why to use save state if you are not a mamedev.
beta tester or similar. 20 years ago when i played real arcades, there was no
save state, there was only this highscore i wanted to catch. Nothing changed
today for me.
