I've designed this for a friend of mine. I have something similar already working, but wider and with a bigger tv. What do you think? Above all, it's practical and comfortable. The tv can be rotated manually and you can move or remove the control panel (there's room for a mouse pad). There's place for a couple of speakers too. The pc tower and the subwoofer will go below. The holes are for guiding the cables through. The piece in the middle is intended to make the cabinet stronger and to add stiffness to the control panel stand (using that metal piece you see). The height of the cabinet is the minimum possible (60cm) and the angle for the tv is 30 |

looks good imo |

I think that's really cool. My problem is that I'm a maniac about things looking like TV's, so I'd have to make a top and sides that fully surround it (making monitor rotation a hassle). Thinking about that, I just had another idea... I have a Samsung LCD monitor that you can just spin on its stand to rotate, plus it pivots. You could cut the size of your machine way down with that and still have monitor rotation. Not copying the form factor of a regular arcade machine sure opens up the options! ;D |

What I've done for hiding the tv is a bezel, marquee or whatever it's called. It's a squared piece of pvc (5mm) with a squared hole of the size of the screen. It's covered with black vynil. It only hides the front of the tv, but it's enough, because that is what you see. When you rotate the tv, you just take this and rotate it too. |

I kind of like the idea... But a few things 1st, its an ergonomic nightmare. Your neck will probably hurt after a bit. look at the guys sitting position. he will be looking down for long periods of time. Raise it up some and a bit less of an angle will help I think... But you should be able to prototype the tv and the mounting tray very easy with some boxes ect and see. But you are supposed to look straight ahead to see the top 3/4 of the monitor or so. So your head looks a bit down, but not that much. second. you will want to be able to clamp that controller on somehow. Having it loose kinda stinks. Whats great about a cabinet is that the controls are locked down firm and you don't have to worry about it moving. third. You will want to make sure that the table is at keyboard height. No reason it couldn't be a computer workstation when not in use.. I pretty cool one at that. fourth... Consider if you can move the monitor up somehow so you can use it as a TV from across the room. Heck, do this and if you don't have a control panels yet, you can go with two wireless xbox controllers (goto consoles forum to see the one I got... easy hack and fits most arcade buttons and some joysticks). Then you can use it from the couch if you want to lay back. fifth.... Is there one? You might consider if you want to go with building a real arcade cabinet instead. I like the functionality here, and probably works for a lot of people better then a true arcade look/feel since it could be used for more then one thing. But if you will only use it for arcade games, you might want it to look like an arcade machine at the same time. good luck and post picts |
