Ok, so I was reading about the new gun, and decided to send an email to the people who make it:

 =========

Hello there,

and got a great answer :)

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your enquiry, here are the answer for the tech question :

Q : Does the laser beam have to be 'ON'  all the time to play a game
correctly? I believe if the pointer is always on, it will make the game too
easy. If the laser pointer has the option to be off until the trigger is
pulled, then I will surely buy the guns.

A : There is a switch on the gun to turn the laser beam ON / OFF. The gun
could work perfectly even you turn the laser beam off. Please note that in
the calibration mode, you could calibrate the gun with the laser beam off.
But you should connect the power cable for the vibration function, such
that
the gun would vibrate for once to indicate the success of each step in the
 calibration process.

If you want take an order, please tell to us how many you need and delivery
to where?
We would count the charge for you.

Best Regards
Melody

 ==========

Looking at the specs, it seems this may be the best lightgun ever :)

1) Works on Any display. CRT, LCD, Projected..ect!
2)  It uses several  ?Infered? sensors for good accuracy?...
3) Laser site for easier targeting and best calibration - and can be turned off :)
4) Can have 2 players at the same time :)
5) Recoil! (ok, vibration.. but still...  ;)  )
6) Normal, Auto-Fire,  and Auto-Reload Modes!
7) Claims mame compatibility :)
8 ) 5 buttons + 1 trigger + a  "d-pad"  !!!  :)
9) Works with PC, Xbox, and PS2

Ive wrote one more email to ask about the type of technology they use to make it function.  Will write more after she responds.

I cant tell if its a coil or a motor.  Still, even if its a motor, one could probably hack it to fire a Monster power coil instead :)

It does say you can use the PC' s power to power the recoil.. or, use your own transformer (not iincluded).  So thats a good sign :)

okay so how would this work?

Would a VGA box be required?

Would it work on MAME and FCE Ultra (NES Emu?)

Im a noob to PC Lightguns but REALLY WANT to implement one on my cab

The problem with this gun seems to be the LED stand, this is how it evades the need for a VGA box

Unfortunately I cant see a way of neatly putting these by my PC monitor
I believe they HAVE to sit vertically..

You don't need any kind of VGA box.

For this gun, the monitor (or lack of) is utterly irrelevant. It has 5 infra-red light sources mounted on 2 thin LED stands that should be mounted wither side of your display. Looks like the sensor is built into the gun.

Also, I see no reason that you could not mount the LED stands above and below the monitor. As far as the gun is concerned this is the same as just holding it at an angle, and it you go the product website there are videos of it in use you can download, where the gun is being held upsidedown at one point. (you would have to remember where to fire for calibration - eg bottom left instead of top left etc...)

This gun looks very promising, as mentioned in a previous thread I've ordered one to test it out. Hopefully it will be accurate enough. (And stay accurate in 2 player mode - strangely it will only work with 1 LED stand in use in 2 player mode.) Its a similar technolgy to the later House in the Dead arcade games  (which had infra red LED's all round the screen for tracking).

It has its own windoze driver (not sure what that means for linux) as well as working with the Gun2Mouse driver. This should mean it can be used with most emulators (ie non mame ones).

Having said all that, I've not seen or heard anyone who has yet tried one (its quite new)... Proof of Pudding and all that.... Mines shipped today apparantly, so 1 journey round the world later and we shall see...

Thanks for that, I may go for one too.
Playasia also sell them.

Im just gonna check my cab today to see the best way to mount those stands neatly.

As it reads in their FAQ, you just need to set up one SET of LED stands...  At least, that's how it sounds to me...

Since this is infrared and not using a visible light source I assume it would work with the LED stands mounted behind tinted glass.
When someone has one of these things in-hand can you take a moment to verify this?

and thats going to be my problem.. I wont be able to get behind the glass again now that my cabinet is completed. I will have to mount the stands externally, neatly somehow.. if its just 1.5cm in width it might not be too much of a problem...

@Extreme8:
I would guess so although I am not familiar with how much (tinted) glass affects infrared (if at all). It certainly mentions that other infra-red sources (yellow lights/sunlight/reflections off the ground) will interfere with the gun. It may have an impact of range. I think the limit is 4-5meters. I also suspect based on the technology that you can't get too close - the gun presumably needs to see all the LED point sources at the same time. I will try when I get mine, although I don't have any tinted glass. (or a cab either...)

Tinted glass should not affect it at all.. think a hifi cabinet with a DVD player inside, very often the glass is tinted, yet you can still use your remote control just fine

@Warborg:
The manual implies 2 led stands to be set up for normal use, but says only 1 needed for 2player mode. Unless I missed something completely?

From their FAQ:

Q8) Could I use two LCD TopGun to play at the same time ?

A) Yes, you can use two LCD TopGun at the same time in Xbox

I think you still need two led stands for two player mode.  I think they are trying to say that you only need one SET of LED stands for two guns.  You should not set up both sets of stands that came with the two guns.

The FAQ, Manual, as well as the rest of the pages appear to have been written in "Engrish" instaed of English.

cool...i even have some old house of the dead guns i could use for hacking.

not like you aren't, but keep us updated about performance and stuff.  the one thing i'm worried about is how far you can move from your initial position after calibrating without losing accuracy.  the rgt gun sounded like you couldn't move more than 4-5 inches.

then again, like someone said before, alot of sega gun games used the same tech and they obviously didn't have any problems with movement after calibration, so if this company did it right, there should be no problem.  i'm suprised sega just didn't make a copy of their system and put i out for consumers.

Thats the other good thing. These are *perfect* (in theory) for the anolgue style gun games (op wolf/T2/rev X etc...) as they can track the whole time - no need for a screen flash at any stage. If they work well, they should be usable for all gun games I can think of....

Now that makes it sound like you need one SET of stands, not one stand.  As in, if you order 2 guns you will get 2 sets of stands, but for 2 to work at the same time you only use one set of those stands...

Quite right - think I misread it as 1 stand. Whereas its actually pretty obvious that they mean don't set up 2 sets of stands, which quite clearly would cause havoc. Thats great news, as it means there should not be weird accuracy drop off for using 2 guns.....

Thats the $$$ question (or $29.99 question anyway). In theory it could be much better than the rgt - with just 1 point of reference (the usb camera) above the screen its never going to stay accurate IMHO. (Not quite true - there is a neat 'Vector' solution some company came up with, allowing 6 degrees of freedom movement using 1 usb camera. ie it could work out the position and direction of the unit it was tracking. Designed for flight sim buffs to wear on there heads to track head position for viewing. Has to track about 6 points on a "known" 3D shape to work though. And can't do 2 player. But thats another story....)

I agree - just think about the IR LED "window" on most remotes themselves, the plastic is nearly opaque.
I just thought it would be something else for the brave early adopters to have a look at before us slackers jumped on board.

The RGT gun actually has 2 points of reference, there are two leds on the gun.

The USB camera that I think you are talking about (Track IR with Vector Pro option) uses 3 points of reference.

This new gun appears to use 5 points of reference.

I ordered one the other day from lik-sang and just ordered anther from Playasia.com.

Have some free time to try these out.  I should have the playasia one in a week, so Ill be able to post a review for one player.  I have no idea how long the lik-sang will take, so no two player review for awhile.

But, at least you'll have a few people's opinions to go on.

No it has 5 infrared sources in total - 3 on one LED stand, 2 on the other, and the detector on the gun.

I have not recievde my gun yet, but I did look at the software.

The Gun2Mouse utility looks like it allows you to map all the buttons on the gun to keystrokes!  Very useful for us.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

I broke down and purchased 2 guns from playasia.  I will try out some 2-player games as soon as I get them.

Anyone know about the LED stands?  From the photo below:

http://www.hkems.com/product/xbox/LCDTopGun.htm

they look like rather large plastic boxes.  The size is listed as:
LED Stand (2 pcs) :   41.0 cm  X 1.5 cm   X 3.0 cm.

My 27" TV is the exact width of my cabinet.  So I am not sure where I would be able to put the LED "towers".

Man that would be a shame if that was the case and these guns turn out to be such a great two player MAME solution.

I couldn't take it anymore and caved.  I just ordered two of them.  They said 3-4 days, so maybe I will get them by the weekend.

We'll see...

I will post back if I get them and things don't work.  Otherwise if you don't hear from me for weeks, assume they work fine since I will have been busy playing all the shoot 'em up games I could find.   ;D

I too broke down and ordered one..... They seem like the perfect solution for us. Given that they track without reference to the light coming from the screen it means that tracking should work 100% of the time, even on very dark scenes and no need for that annoying screen flashing. Although if you like screen flashing (and some people do) you should still be able to have it turned on in games that use it.

As I'm still working on my cabinet design, I'll be able to incorporate the sensors directly into the design. Couldn't be better, or have come at a better time for me.

I'm now selling a PS99L (Guncon and Guncon2 USB) Light Gun with laser targeting and full recoil if anybody wants one.... PM Me...

Dear Steve,

Q ) These guns you sell seem to use a different technology.  Can you explain
roughly how they work? How accurate they are?

A : There are 5 sets of infrared LEDs on the two LED stand, which would be
place beside the screen. There is a mini camera at the gun. When you shoot,
the camera would recognize the co-responding distance of the 5 sets of
infrared LEDs, and the LCD TopGun system would then calculate the position
where you are aiming at. As this technology is total independent of what
screens you are using, therefore the LCD TopGun system could support every
types of screens. The accuracy of the LCD TopGun is 1024 X 768 pixel, which
is much higher then that of the traditional CRT light gun (around 3xx X 2xx
pixel).

Best Regards
Melody
