I think it is a snubbing diode soldered in parallel to prevent back EMF.  btw:  That is not my crappy soldering job connecting it to the terminals, it came like that.

I tested the solenoid with my laptop's power cable, which is 15 volts, 3.5 amps and it works.  I hooked up a meter and the solenoid pulls about 1.15 amps.   Since, I don't have a 24V power supply and my cab already has a 14V power supply for lighting that has plenty of amps, I'm thinking I might be able to get by with 14 volts.
