Bravo!

It's about time something was said about some of the horrible pieces of crap being built.

What needs to be done next is a send up of all of the over "bling'd" cabinets. 800 Flashing LED's, beer taps, foot massagers etc. Oh, and all of the giant cabinets with 15 inch monitors.

I've got to hand it to him.. <flame repellant armour on>

I have to agree with pretty much all of those machines. I understand that not everyone has:

1) Artisitic Talent
2) Woodworking Skills
3) Money to burn

BUT...

Surely the point of BYOAC is that you're trying to recapture something that you've loved. Face it, not one plays mame games unless they've been into arcades and loved the games, cause frankly alot of those games are CRAP without the nostalgia factor.

In all my life, in ALL the arcades I've ever been in, I've NEVER EVER seen anything like these machines. What are these guys trying to capture?

I mean we've all made crap stuff, but dont they stand back and go 'Wow! That is UGLY.' What do other people say? Are they just polite?

Nothing annoys me more than the socalled FrankenPanels that most BYOAC builders seem to favour, I mean 4 players, 8 buttons each, 2 coin buttons (Even with coin mechs!) 2 start buttons, 1 escape button, a randomly placed spinner, a HUGE ASS trackball and perhaps a tron controller.

All I ask when I see these is, WHY?

The concept this guy is trying to put across is a good one, but done badly. A few years back every man and his dog was building their own homepage. So a guy started a website called http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com.

Its still around and the guy has gone on to write several books and become a big celebrity. The point of the site is that it offers constructive criticism and tries to teach new players what NOT to do. Unfortunately the only point of this site is to put ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on the people who have worked on this stuff, however misguided. Why not counter the criticism with some creative insight into what IS good design practice for arcade machines.

See the Daily Sucker for a new page each day that SUCKS.

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/dailysucker/

Perhaps if the site leaned more towards what NOT to do and showed examples of quality work, it might be better received by this community.

Just my two bits.

I'm just relieved (and a little flattered) that my machine wasn't on there. The people whose machines he trashed should take it as constructive criticism. Or maybe destructive criticism.

I'd have to disagree.  There are some kickass games in mame that I'd never seen before, or had the pleasure to enjoy in an arcade (ie no nostalgia).  Heck some were never even released (prototypes).  What's crap in my opinion are most of the recent games, endless spinoffs on 1v1 fighter games, etc.

All I can ask is, why do you care?  I have what you would probably consider a frankenpanel, with a spinner, trackball, 3 players, 2 hidden coin buttons, and two player start buttons, and folding cup holders for beers.  I designed the CP so I could play just about all MY favorite games satisfactorily.  I could care less what you (or anyone else who believe their opinions to be important) thinks about it.  I built it that way because it worked best for me to comfortably enjoy all my favorite games, not because it was the 'right' or 'wrong' or 'authentic' way to do it according to someone at BYOAC.

That being said, I thought the site was hilarious (and I have marble contact paper on my CP under the lexan haha) and there were definitely some strange looking arcade cabinet shaped things on that page.  ;D  He is definitely a 'Maddox' wannabe, though.
