not in the US... here, millions of tons of good food are thrown away because of liability suits.  I worked in food service all through high school and we threw out obscene amounts of food every night.  The reason was that if you donate food to a place like a homeless shelter, and then someone gets sick off of it, you will be sued out the arsehole.

No good deed goes unpunished in the US.

Yup - but don't do anything to intentionally contaminate it - toss bleach on it to keep people from rummaging and you'll get sued for poisoning someone.

Pretty much... if you donate it you get sued.

If you throw it away you get people rummaging through your dumpster who make a mess, cause problems with the board of health, and sue you if they hurt themself.

If you throw it away and contaminate it you get sued by the people rummaging through your dumpster who make a mess, cause problems with the board of health, and then poison themself.
