it says 504mb of ram. which i guess is software talk for 512mb? i recall there being a small issue of definition of what a megabyte is. bugger. i was hoping i did only have 256 mb physical memory. would have been a simple solution... drive doesnt need dfragging either by the way (in case you were wondering). oh well...

This can also be a side effect of a bad plug-in, spyware, a virus; any number of things. Unfortunately, there is no one good answer, and we could conjecture all day on what the problem would be without having access to your machine physically.

I hope your search ends successfully.

zvar:
Actually, since it's a nice round number that's the difference (8 Meg) then it's most likely that you have an on-board video card that is using that 8 meg as shared video memory.

As for the slowdowns, Click on Start, Run and type "msconfig".  In the startup tab uncheck anything you don't want running.

thanks guys! i know its strayed from the board discussion topic. ive just run system mechanic and spy sweeper to clear out some crap. i havent run them since i got the machine here a month ago and im guessing it hadnt been done by my sister since i left in may! that might help a bit.
and zvar, ill try that out msconfig too (",)

USSEnterprise:
Beware using msconfig. You can end up really screwing things up.
