Video card to TV-Small problem
« on: April 17, 2002, 02:54:28 pm »
Howdy.. I have a wee bit of a problem withe the above, namely that the TVs output is black and white. This sounds like a pretty easy thing to fix, but I sure as hell haven't managed to do it.. Video card is a Geforce 2, connected from the s-video to the TV's scart via one of those little adapter things (am I sounding technical here?). Any help appreciated, even a link to somewhere where I might find the answers would be great.

Cheers

It's probably one of two things.  Actually it's most likely both.  I had the exact same problem and here's what I found.

1. Must be S-video from the card to the TV.  Don't convert it, you'll loose signal strength.  This is most likely the reason for the loss of color.

2. Geforce cards use different TV-Out chipsets from one manufacturer to the next, so there is no telling the quality of the TV-Out chip.

Here are my suggestions.  First off no matter what you decide to do with the Geforce 2 card, you will never be happy with the performance until you have a TV with SVideo.  It's what I've read and what I've experienced, so I'm fairly confident that a TV with SVideo will make a big difference.  I'm using a Panasonic 27" CT-27D11.  Works great.  Still looks a little fuzzy in windows, but looks great in the games.

Second, go for an ATI card.  I'm not a big fan of the ATI cards, but I'm using one in my setup and I'm quite pleased with it so far.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem too.

I found it was either the little adaptor thingy or the SCART socket - but as soon as I plugged the S-Video lead into the TV's S-Video socket (rather than through the adaptor) I got colour.

Forgive me if I am wrong but doesn't the SCART connector have connections for RGB input?

The converter you  mean? It has 2 audios, s-video and  video sockets. I'm lost with all this stuff so I don't know if the video one means RGB. I just wanna play my games! I'm off to try it on another TV now to see if I get the same result. If so it looks like I'll have to steal myself a new one :)

I think he's talking about a standard RCA composite connector.  Then again I could be wrong...

I found it.  A VGA to Scart converter:  http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/vga2tv/circuit.html
