Another Pac Man Bartop
« on: December 20, 2005, 09:33:59 pm »
Nearly completed a Pac Man bartop.
Its a xmas present but I may keep it  :P

Just need to have the bezel graphics printed and change the joy to a red balltop and buttons from black to yellow.

A big thanks to Mr. Bubblehead for the bartop kit.

To be honest the for sale pics of the cab in the buy and sell made me think "What an ugly cab" But seeing one finished I am really impressed nice work.

I'll second that on the ugmo look and feel... until the final product.

That's a damn nice cab--you should be impressed.

What it really made me think about, though, and I apologize for the sidebar and potential threadjack...

With a very small cabinet comes the need for a much more focused set of functionality that can be delivered (ie # of buttons and joy sticks, etc.).  Me, I'm a huge fan of Crazy Climber and it's one of the reasons that I'm even into this "hobby".

Anyway, you end up with a small footprint and limited space to deliver everything in.  Obviously, the number of games that you can tinker with then becomes much less involved.  Hell, I don't think I'd want more than a dozen games at most on something like this.  Let it be the subset of everything; the "in-betweener" that you tinker with and get all caught up in.

So, that tells me that it'd be pretty cool/easy/potentially "new" to do an FE in Flash that's driven by XML.  Upfront, it seems like it would have to be a manual process for modifying the XML, but it could be pretty easy and pretty cool at the same time.  Just rambling outloud.

Alex, can you share your costs/investment for the entire project?

The cost wasn't too bad :

$179.00 for the "kit"
$10.00 for the Jakks 5 in 1
$15.00 for the 13" tv/vcr combo (bought it on Ebay, vcr eats tapes)
$15.00 for the paint
$15.00 for the T-mold (still have plenty left for another project)

I already had the joy/buttons but I'm going to get those replaced so maybe another $20 or so for that.
Also had some plexi left over from another project that I used for the CP
The marquee and cp art was printed on my inkjet on banner paper.
The bezel art is too big and I'll have to get that done at Kinkos, not sure the cost of that yet.

But overall not that expensive and it was a fun project.

Nice.  A $250 project for that.  Simply wicked.

So, now for the hard question:  Care to share how you rigged the Jakks?  That'd be a great tutorial.

Very sweet.  I could see doing this cabinet.

Who am I kidding?  I'd love to do this cabinet.  Jakks'd get me through the night, but something tells me I'd want more.  Was there any room for a mobo, etc.?

Nice bartop. I too would go for the Jakks to forgo additional costs for an "economy bartop", but would probably eventually convert over to a PC eventually.

On the Mobo question... I think there would be enough room for one of those mini motherboards if you use a computer monitor.
I'll do a write-up on hacking a Jakks in a few days, it was actually pretty easy and I didn't even have to do any soldering.

Also if the cab is going to spend it's life just sitting in one place you could have a full sized PC hidden out of view and use 30foot KVM cables going to the cab.

See, I told you not to put your Pac-Man machine directly over that secret trap door.  THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS!!!

Truly a thing of beauty.  Now, I really should get rid of my upright and build one of these.
