my problem is the fasted computer i could get would be a 850Mhz p3 with 320MB ram and an 8Mb agp video card. would i be able to run snes roms with that type of computer? i need to use USB for the controls so i want to stay in windows. can windows 2000 support MAME in dos mode?

Just use the WINDOWS BUILD of MAME (official) not the DOS one, or in your case why not just use MAME32.
