My monitor has some slight discoloration in the corner which has happened before and I've always just grabbed a magnet and lightly slid it along the monitor to fix the colour (my monitor's degaussing doesn't work I guess).  Usually I have no problems doing this until last night...

I got the magnet close to the monitor and got this weird feeling shoot up my arm.  It didn't feel like a shock, just a strange pulsing, wave shoot up my arm.  I didn't really hurt, but it scared the hell out of me.

So be careful out there guys when working on your monitors.

get a degaussing coil. im sure someone else can tell you where to get one. (i dont know)

I guess that's the effect of strong electromagnetic field... I'm a pgrmmer... and me and my co-worker are using 21" monitors.... (in an open area where our monitors are basically back to back of each other...)

when he turns his monitor on, not only that my monitor's color will be slightly dis-oriented for a couple of seconds, you can also hear that "Duuuu-annnnn" sound and my head (literally!!!) my head will feel that effect !!!....  its like a wave hitting you.... not like it hurting or anything.... but you can actually feel that "wave" pass thru you....

I hope I made it understandable.... just trying to share my experience....

I know excatly what you mean about the "Duuuu-annnnn" sound, I felt the same thing!

Perhaps a degaussing wand rather than a magnet would eb a good idea.

Seriously though - Don't our brains rely on the magnetic field around them? I heard this once. I also heard that changes in the magnetic field cause eplileptic fits!

Are these monitors you are using very old? Or even broken maybe?

the monitors are not old... if I didn't remember wrong, the one that I can "feel" very clearly is those 19 inch Gateway monitors... (and they are new monitors at the time...)  but it only happens when you turn it on...

About big monitors and magnet fields; well, I have an Eizo F980 (21", or 22" as some would say for some reason...) at home, and a 19" Nokia monitor on the right side of if, more than 1.5 m (~5') away. Turning either monitor on will affect the other, but more interestingly, the Eizo (the latest top-of-the line model; not an oldie) goes more like "BzzzOOOIing!" when powered on, or the degauss function is activated. (That's actually where the sound comes from, AFAIK.) I don't think I've heard a monitor that loud before...

Anyway, considering that I've had some rather powerful speakers with gigantic unshielded magnets closer than half that distance from the Nokia without problems (the speakers will affect practically any CRT within .5 m; sometimes more), the magnetic field from the Eizo's degauss coil has to be pretty darn strong to have that effect on > 1.5 m!

Maybe it has something to do with large high resolution monitors needing extremely powerful (ie effective) degaussing?

Anyway, I can't swear by it, but I definitely get the feeling that it's actually more than the sound that is transferred to my head if I'm within about 1 m (3') when I turn it on. Can't be healthy in the long run... *heh*

Since we're kinda, sorta on the topic, since I've got this discolour on the screen I can assume the my degausser isn't working.  Does anyone have any info on fixing, or installing these?

I have the same monitor and experience that discoloration in both the bottom corners of my monitor, unbelievably annoying!  I am wanting to try this degaussing thing, anyone have a link to someplace in the states that woul dsell a degaussing wand like Zipper is showing in his link?

I've heard some people use an electric drill.  Just start about 10 feet away and work your way in towards the monitor.  The move it around the screen and then back out 10 feet again..  I've never tried this but a few friends have..

I tried the drill thing, didn't do a thing for the monitor, maybe it isn't putting out a strong enough field or something, thanks for the top though.  I guess I will go ahead and invest in a degaussing coil, what's another $50 into my cab, anyways?

drills will work. I have a speaker in my bedroom by my tv. I have to use a drill once a month. mind you its a large drill (hammer drill) also a blender will work.
my sister has a gateway and the monitor was so loud the company replaced it. drove us all nuts. some day I will get around moving the speaker but I do like the sound wear its at. any Ideas how tho shield a speaker?

The best way i have found to degauss a CRT (short of acually usign a real degaus tool) is using a regular audio amplifier and hook it up to a large coil of wire, then play a sinewave through the amp and when you are done slowly turn the amp down to nothing, it works great ive done it many times.  For the coil you can use almost anything that has a resistance larger then the minimum resistance of the amp you are using(ie 8 ohms) such as a solonoid, electromagnet(if you happen to have one kicking around), voice coil ripped out of an old speaker.  

To get the sinewave just use an audio editing program for your pc ( sound forge can do it, and so can cooledit i think)

A to shield a speaker you would need to mount another magnetic of similar strength to the back of the speaker magnet.  I think it needs to be installed in the position where it doesn't want to go.  That's why it's so tricky to do.  I'm sure that their is a site that can tell you how to do it.  

Much easier just to buy an already shielded speaker.  They aren't that much more expensive, but can be challenging to find just the right speaker already shielded.

If you have a soldering gun it will work like a degausing coil, I use it on TVs when this happens and it works great.

Well, I tried the drill and the blender trick, neither one of them worked.  I got my degaussing coil from Happ today and it worked like a charm!  That crappy discoloration is gone and the monitor looks great now.
