Useful woodworking books
« on: October 30, 2005, 01:34:26 pm »
My cabinet is 95% done. I built it, play tested it for almost a year and am in the process of adding the final touches, so naturally I'm thinking about how to build a second one  ;D  One of the drawbacks, I've noticed, of the Lucid design is the inherent weakness of using butt joints with mdf. Keep in mind that I'm not knocking the Lucid cabinet, but the same design could be stronger. On my next cabinet I plan to incorporate some basic joinery techniques to yield a stronger cabinet.

So in the spirit of research I recently visited my local library and found a very good book on the subject.

The Complete Manual of Woodworking:

This book is hyper-illustrated and demonstrates not only how virtually every tool is used, but also runs down joints, hinges and fasteners, finishing, veneers, planning and design and just about anything else you can think of. I very highly recommend this book!

I also wanted to mention this website:

It's a pc modding site, but I found some very interesting ideas and links there that might be of interest. The Doom3 mod is just stunning.

A while back I subscribed to Oreilly's Make Magazine and have been thrilled with it ever since. I think the arcade builders among us might find it highly inspirational. I sure do.

Finally I found a few books that, while not directly useful for arcade building, were very interesting:
The Workshop Book and the Workbench book are very interesting reads for anyone new to woodworking and perhaps trying to make that garage into a workshop to rival Hephaestus'

Along the same lines is the Toolbox book:

If anyone else knows of a good book, video or website that may be useful (even if it isn't strictly arcade related) I would love to hear it.
Alright. it's saturday night; I have no date, a full bottle of Shasta and my all Rush mixtape....Let's ROCK!!

The craftsmanship on that Doom3 Case Mod is incredible.  That guy is extremely talented and creative.  I don't have the patience to even attempt something like that.

It makes my Arcade Cabinet look like a hack job. :P
