I had the same concerns as you when planing my cab.I was not comfortable without having something to hold the plexi down on the edges.Unless your buttons are close to the edge I felt there was too much potential for it to get snagged and lifted causing a crack.I wound up using a product from  http://www.t-moulding.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=10&cat=16&page=1  called t-molding with lip.My cp is made from 5/8 with a 1/8 plexi panel on top.I then cut one of the lips off the t-molding with a razor knife,it sounds harder than it is,cutting the extra lip off was not really that hard once you get the hang of it.I ordered a couple extra feet to be safe and practice on.I cut my slot in a scrap piece first to make sure the slot was positioned right so the remaining lip of the t-molding was tight against the plexi.I used a single piece that wraps all the way around the top of my cp.If you notch the lip out carefully at the corners you can get a very nice finish with no gaps.
