These days they do.  Custom hardware is still being made, but a lot of the times these days development is done on cheap, off-the-shelf hardware.  Makes spare parts easier to get as well.

I have my pc de-cased inside my cab for heat dissipation reasons.  If I have it inside a case, I'd have to have fans in the case to move the hot air out, and that makes noise.  Outside of a case, the PC parts get to take advantage of the "chimney effect" the cab has for nice quiet fanless cooling.
