« on: November 18, 2005, 09:25:16 am »
Hi all,

Wah!Cade is a clone of Minwah's excellent MameWAH.

Features:
* It's MameWAH for GNU/Linux!
* It uses MameWah's config files and layouts.
* Supports the xmame emulator (more to follow)

Full details inc. screenshots & downloads at:
http://www.anti-particle.com/wahcade.shtml

Cheers,
Andy

Python.  Don't see a lot of that around here.

which version of mamewah does it "clone"? there is a lot more to mamewah that meets the eye!
does it accept mamewah ctrlr files? can it use mamewah .ftr and .lst files? (I'm not sure if this what you mean by config files)

Nice to see more choices for Linux based cabs. I chose windows for two reasons: I run PC games on my cab, and the lack of frontends.

EDIT: I read the readme on your web page, it does provide some of the answers to my questions.

It's based on the config files from v1.61 of mamewah, and it uses mamewah's ctrlr, filters (.ftr and .lst) and layouts (.lay)

There's still many features from mamwah that need adding to wahcade - watch this space basically  ;D

Wouldn't it be linux appropriate to name it x-wah or something like that?

Why conform to a naming standard that doesn't exist ? Not all X-Windows based software is called x-something.... Thats the beauty of open-source isn't it ? You can call it what you want. In fact, you can call your software whatever you like even if its not open source....

After all, no-one asked you to call one of your projects WIN-Johnny5..... :)

Anyway, back on topic - I've been doing some pre-release testing of Wah!Cade and I can say that if you want to stick with Linux on your arcade box and aren't up to Advanced MAME (I gave up on Linux as my 'cade o/s because of this) then Wah!Cade could well be your saviour. Balki has done a great job and has the blessing of Minwah too !

Just wanted to say excellent job!  I haven't tried it (I know nothing Linux) but it looks/sounds great so far :)

My next final release isn't too far off so hopefully this can eventually be updated in line with the latest changes to avoid confusion with people mixing different versions...

Haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but is there any reason it won't run on Windows or OSX?  I don't think any of the required packages are OS specific, but I could be wrong.

Balki,
This is an excellent idea.  I've been dying to switch my machine to Linux -- the only reason I didn't is because Mamewah is not available for it.

I will definitely be trying your software in the weeks to come.

Minwah, your software is, in my opinion, the best FE for an arcade machine.  So let it be a testament to your work that I am running Windows on the most important machine in my house.

Nice one pkurby1 ! Balki has tested Wah!Cade on Ubuntu Breezy, I've tested it on both Ubuntu Hoary and Breezy. So can you post your finidngs (good or bad) AND the distro you are using. The more varied the ditros the better !

I've had a few problems on my laptop with Ubuntu - hoary worked fine apart from some of the tranparencies didn't work in Wah!Cade (something to do with pythoin libraries I think), so I decided to upgrade to Breezy. It looks great in Breezy but unfortunately I have other non Wah!Cade related problems with USB, HAL and some other stuff (like being thrown back to the login prompt after exiting xmame on fullscreen). None of which are Wah!Cade related I might add !

2600 - Balki will be answering your question tonight I think (he's gone to pick up his new car this afternoon).

Minwah - can you guess what make of car Balki has just bought ?

Happy testing !

I haven't looked at it yet, just the web page a bit. I run PC games on my cab so I probably wouldn't use this for my current  cab but it's always good to know there is an alternative.

I'll play with it a bit over the long weekend (Thanksgiving weekend in the US).
I can give it a try under Mandriva, Mepis and VectorLinux, so that should round the distros a bit. I'm particularly interested in trying it out under vectorlinux since I woudln't use a full fledge distro for a cab (VectorLinux is a minimalist slackware build using IceWM/Rox instead of KDE or Gnome).

Any chance of a port that would be Mac OS X friendly? I've got a few Mac friends I'm sure would love to use it.

papaschtroumpf - excellent ! I suspect Mandriva would be the best distro to start with then "work up" to the minimalist slackware build. Let balki know how you get on (presumably here in this post).

Gozur - According to python.org, python is portable to windows, Linux, Mac and Amiga but it really depends on the libraries Balki used (I think). I've done a little python coding myself but it was mostly cutting and pasting other peoples code (it was a passable asteroids clone available on Balkis site) but I seem to remember the same code worked on both Linux and windows.

Any mac users out there who are able to give it a test ? Presumably you'd need to "know what you are doing" rather than someone who just has a Mac ....  ;D

I know python is fine on the Mac, so as long as the additional python modules (pygtk and elementtree) are available for the Mac then there should be no problem.  Let me know if you get it working  :)

Edit: Looks like pygtk is available via: http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/section.php/gnome
and elementtree should just compile as it's pure python.

Champion!

Linux MAME frontends have been slim pickings, and you've gone and cloned my favourite frontend ever on my favourite OS ever.  Brilliant!  ;D

Elvis lives ! :)

Did some more testing last night on my laptop. Managed to fix the problem with xmame dropping back to the (gdm) login screen when you press ESC. It turned out to be (somehow) due to using "-x11-mode 1" - which forces fullscreen mode. If I use "-x11-mode 3" it works fine.

Definately worth mentioning this - make sure you can run xmame <rom> from the command line before you try Wah!Cade. Once you are happy with screensize, sound etc then move onto getting W!C working.

"Buks has left the building"

Thankyouverymuch.

Enough of the Elvis references......

There will no doubt be some Bob Marley and the Wailers playing in it though !

Clue : what car would be associated with mamewah/minwah ?

If you don't know the answer then its a mini. Ooops spoilt all the fun....  ;D

I gathered that, but there is a huge difference between a BMW 'Mini' and a real Mini ;)

ahhh - my embarrisingly tiny knowledge of cars shows me up again.

On a Wah!Cade note - more testing ongoing at the moment. Balki has created another thread for the latest release - "Pork Chop" so go there for the latest info.

Pffft. MacMame blows anyways. It's terribly slow on my powerbook.

Now I *have* to go home and try it out on my Windows box though. Didn't anyone notice that the source is available and GPL? This means you can finally add that feature that Minwah wouldn't. No offense to Minwah's awesome frontend and the invaluable amount of work he's put in - and I certainly can't expect him to add hacky "features" that are only going to be useful to myself. But hey, with open source I can hack to my hearts content.

Thanks,
Joseph Elwell.

I would suggest that perhaps your PowerBook blows, and not MacMAME.  :P

I haven't found MacMAME to be any slower nor faster than either XMAME nor AdvanceMAME under both X11 and SDL on MacOSX.  It seems fine to me.
