Quarterback nailed it.

Santoro - you have been the creator and the guy who seems to be selling these so I will default to you. Obviously, if you are going to make and sell - you have to know you are not going to lose money on the project. I certainly will not do it, I work 80+ hrs a week at my own company!

It seems a few of you are missing the point. Nobody likes the dogs / clowns / dragons/ and other Cr^p that is out there for generic tokens.

I am trying to see if there is any interest in a token that would fit more than just the MAME community.

pmc:

I just modified one of my mechs to take tokens. Worked like a champ with a Chuck-E-Cheese token so I ordered a batch of 100 brass MAME tokens. I don't like the 2005 BYOAC design quite as much and the 2004's are obviously not available. The MAME ones are quite nice.

Maybe a re-run of the 2004 BYOAC design as a 2006 (re-issue) token would make sense? There seems to be demand here (the design is awesome afterall).

On a similar note, anyone want to trade fifty 2004 tokens?

I am trying to see if there is any interest in a token that would fit more than just the MAME community.  If you MAME / NEO-GEO / or RESTORE you are preserving the past. Even though I restore - I still respect the Mame folks. If not for MAME many games would have been lost to history.

It doesn't seem as if ANYONE has missed your point based on the answers given.  A generic token simply has less appeal and/or cache than something specifically "branded" to the reason they're here in the first place, namely, MAME and BYOAC.

Having "generic" tokens would require a far FAR wider reaching advertisement to make it worthwhile to produce the small yet costly run the mint requires.

What you seem to be missing is the fact that those "other" people you're speaking of HAVE TO FIND THESE THINGS IN ORDER TO HAVE AN INKLING THAT THEY MIGHT WANT TO BUY THEM.  Please, explain HOW those who aren't "in this community" would EVER find out about them....doesn't it stand to reason that they'd have to be part of this community?  If so, then it's up to THEM, if they see the need, to do a "generic" token, since it requires no assistance from anyone here other than a vote to see what generic images they'd like best.

You've also got economy of scale.  Santoro simply isn't going to broadcast to the world on the off chance he MIGHT sell the entire run (or else he's have to include that in the price, driving it up, making it less desireable) and clearly, as others have stated here, the demand for generic tokens IN THIS MARKET simply isn't enough to warrant consideration.

You're not causing a "firestorm", you're simply NOT looking at the responses given as valid reasons NOT to consider a generic token.

The lame "generic" tokens you state that are out there are what YOU'VE seen.  If you've ever actually checked out a token site, you can easily get whatever you want made.  I've SEEN quite a few existing dies they've already got which simply don't fit under your "dog/cat/heart/cake" crap.  If the demand was there, it'd have been done already.  Period.

Nah, if you wanna see a real storm, look at the political threads in 'Everything Else' around November last year.
