I-Pac: Ctrl,Alt and Shift problems
« on: January 23, 2003, 04:38:35 pm »
I recently got an I-Pac. Im using the default mame settings. I installed a
few controls to to it, two street fighter setups. I daisy chained the ground
wires. My problem happens that when i am in Mame and i want to reconfigure
the buttons. If i try to set a button to LEFT Shift it ends up setting it to
LEFT SHIFT RIGHT SHIFT instead. Same thing happens with the Alt and Ctrl.
When i go into Notepad and do the CTRL-ALT-P test mode, every button seems
to be registering perfectly. What could be wrong?

Thanks

I think when it sends it from the Ipac it doesn't specifiy if it's the left shift key or the right. I get this same issue when using my wireless keyboard that only has one CTRL key, if I were to map button 1 to CTRL it'd show as LEFT CTRL RIGHT CTRL

Is there a reason you need to differentiate?

Is there a reason you need to differentiate?

THe only reason I could see would be multi players on a keyboard(but then you wouldn't need the Ipac would ya?), or if you had so many buttons that you actually needed to map everything on a 104key

As long as every buttons works on the i-pac as mame default inside of mame i'll be happy :D

I already posted at ultimarc and they referred me back here.  :)

the mame defaults use left ctrl, left shift, etc... thats why Im asking.  I can go in and remap the those buttons to simulate different keys, but i didnt think i would have to do that.

Are you saying that the "lshift rshift"  input won't work with the mame defaults?

I don't get it, your asking if your going to have a problem doing something that you probably wouldn't do. There are lots of questionable key configurations that you'll probably want to stay away from. I've never seen any one complaining about the ipac's defaults for mame and in my experience they work very well.

I already posted at ultimarc and they referred me back here.  :)
I went over to ultimarc and read what I assume to be the thread that you are refering to. No one suggested that you come back here. What are you up to?

This is a problem with the MAME keyboard engine. Several people have noticed
it. I am not sure if there is a cure, or wether it has been fixed in later
versions. There have been some postings on the message boards at
www.arcadecontrols.com about the problem in the past, you could try a search
to see if there is any info.

Hmm, I wonder what andy saw here.  I don't remember anything like that.  If it is a problem with mame maybe those at mame.net would know, but I'd expect flames over there.

Not sure if that's the same problem or not, but that's the rshift/lshift thread I remember.

Do you have your keyboard handy?  If so can you try and replicate the problem with the keyboard?  I remember trying to change the keys around once and the right and left came up and I'm sure that when it did neither of the buttons would register.  But I did do it while the game was paused as the other thread points out seems to be a problem.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.  I did have my keyboard handy, and the actual keys would produce the same result.  Looking at the previous thread that someone posted, i saw that having the game paused while configuring the keys could be the problem.  I always have it paused when changing keys.  So hopefully that is my problem.  I will check that when i get home tonight.  Thanks again :)

That is the source of the problem. Had the same issue, and when "unpaused" it works A1.

This is funny.

The reason you get LEFT SHIFT RIGHT SHIFT is because you are pausing MAME when you config the buttons.  Try setting them up while a game is running and it'll work fine.

I got home, tried changing it without pause being on and everything worked perfect.  Thanks all :)
