Just wanted to let everyone know that if you just can't get these vids on torrents for some reason I am now offering them up on DVD with the rest of my EmuMovies sets.  I had done this before, then my website crashed, I have finally got around to offering them again.  It is a five DVD set and includes all of the EmuMovies releases as well as Cdbrowns mame vids.

This may have already been dealt with before, and I suspect there's a good reason for not doing it...but the existence of these EmuMovies has me thinking: why couldn't a front-end (like MameWah for example) have a small window in place of the screenshot area, that automatically plays the ROM file, and skips ahead a certain number of frames, so, essentially, we'd have authentic game previews, and these movies would not need to be manually generated?

Wouldn't that save a TON of work? The previews could even read off of a global .ini file that contains beginning and ending frame references, per ROM. Edited by the community or whatever.

I'm pretty sure that (he whose name I dare not speak) had this going on in the front-end for Ultra**** machines?

Am I on crack? Or is this just not possible?

To late now anyway, the mame set is complete minus a few new additions, and I have completed many of the console systems already.  Although I still have quite a few to go but since they are not mame based it would probably be impossible to have a frontend do it.  Plus on most of the console releases I have to manually play the game and then do a system reset to get the intro sequences.  It's a lot of hard work to be sure, but in some sick, twisted way, I kind of enjoy doing it.

Like I have said before, I built my cab so I could spend YEARS setting it up.... what a hobby

Is there a thread where I can read up on the problem?  (I've searched, but haven't found anything yet)

Sort of like embedding a MAME instance as an object in the FE.  Budda, I have seen web pages that run actual MAME roms surrounded by ads etc...  why couldn't this work?  Does MAME dislike multitasking?

Technicalities aside, MrC, that would give you views of the machine's attract mode, not actual game play.  It would probabably be good for some games and lame for others.

It may have been running something in the web page but IMO it wasn't MAME.

I suppose a front end author (or someone writing a PHP web page) could rewrite the MAME display code to run on the front end's display, then use all the rest of the MAME code as-is. But why do that?

Of course I could be wrong and you can run an instance of an application and output it's window to another application's window. Again, why do that? Why do the full work of running the emulator which may or may not run full speed when you can just display a movie? One great thing about these movies is that they will run full speed, even on games that run at 5 FPS in MAME.

Hmmmm..... yeah. I wonder how many didn't have some sort of attract mode though?

That's also why I mentioned the idea of an exterior frame listing, so the community at large could find the relevant "action" frames and configure the listing to just play those frames in the window. Jumping past all the promo crud, to just show gameplay.

I think you're right...this just might be the better way. As long as crazy people like Circo exist!   :D

Again, why do that?

Well, just to clarify my initial thought on it...it would certainly save HD space, as the movies are currently filling 5 DVD's. It would also, in theory, have a preview for every ROM, since it would be generating them on the fly. This means in the future, as roms are added, and others are dropped, the preview movies are always up-to-date.

I can't imagine people creating preview movies forever. Although, I could be wrong.
But the speed comment, and the attract mode issue are certainly interesting hurdles. Although, why would you want to see a preview for a game you can't play anyhow?  :P

To clarify the mame preview set is just under 3GB.  The majority of my 5 DVD set are consoles and handhelds.

Good news everyone - I have been able to convince the powers that be over at [romsite name redacted] that torrent zipping all the vids is unnecessary.  So for those that are going to get the vids all you'll need to do is point the torrent at whatever folder you have extracted all the videos to and it'll update from there.  No separate folders for each letter.  No need to have the videos used in the front end in one folder and another folder full of the zipped stuff for seeding.

Just one folder full of avi's - leeching, seeding, front ending  :applaud:

I think I've almost given up on the idea of separating out the mature vids from the rest of the pack.  I may just leave them out of this release all together and put them in for the 105 update.  When you start up the new torrent (once it's available), it'll verify the data you have an just update the new stuff - it shouldn't download the whole lot again.  If it does then stop the torrent, check what you've done and post here.

Moving house on the weekend and may not get broadband for a while so hopefully I'll get this going tonight.

I never understood why they made you zip those all up, I always used a folder with a bunch of avi's for my sets.  Well, good to hear and I look forward to the update, thanks!

Hello,

I'm working with CD on certain movies that are missing.

If there is any non-mature game that is working in MAME but there is no video in CD's collection, please post the name of the ROM.

The only one I currently know about is gaxeduel. There was a bug in the MMM process (gasp) that handled games that change resolution.

Thanks,
Buddabing

I believe it can be done with VirtualDub. What you would do is make an image with your game name, then run a VirtualDub filter as described in this link.

What would be cool would be to have this be integrated into the movie making progress, since it uses VirtualDub as well.

Is there a reason very few of these (at least...the ones I randomly choose) have any sound?

Is it because most people have background music (ambience) playing between games? I would personally prefer that while going through the list the avi's played the sounds of the games loud and clear.

More likely its that a lot of arcade games will have a dip switch setting to enable/disable sound during the attract mode. A lot of games default to only making a sound when its been credited. Find one with no sound, and see if when running the game itself is any different - it should not be....

Update - am progressing with the 106 update in the following order

1. 13 out of 16 mahjong done
2. 158 out of 294 mature done
3. Try the 8 games that were completely missed in 104
4. Retry the 97 games that didn't work but were supposed to in 104
5. Update my list with the latest catver
6. Create any new games
7. Check through list of "unplayable" to see if any can produce vids (not accurate against catver)

Trying to do a bit each day, but haven't had a chance to work on it much over the last 2 weeks.

I'm nearing completion of the .106 set.  The following is a list of games supposedly not working according to MAWS.  If you know of a game that is in this list that does work in .106 please post here so I can add it to the pack.  If someone was kind enough to test (including controls) them all that would be very appreciated.

Just adding to this )p( and myself expermiented with running mame within the fe ages ago.  It is impractical.

Yes it is attract modes btw (why in the world people want just gameplay is beyond me considering attract modes contain the gameplay and they are cooler looking.)

You can run mame as an element on the fe (or at least look that way)  the problem arises in that,.. well it's mame, have you ever ran it before?

Mame takes a long time to load roms... it takes a long time for some games to boot, and you have warning screens and such to deal with.  Mame also takes a heap of memory, so your fe is gonna slow to a crawl on the larger games.

Then there are the usual window-related issues like removing the border, maintaing focus while still keeping the mame wndow visible ect...

So it is possible, you just don't want to do that.

Howard - I'm assuming you are responding to the various posts at the top of this thread about putting mame in an FE.  Well I hope so anyway.....

I do endevour to capture the attract modes, however some games just don't show any action during the attract sequence or even have any sequence and hence don't provide the user any idea of what the game play is about.  Which I admit goes against the premise of the attract sequence, but I like to see what a small clip of what the game is going to be, I can then check out the full attract mode in full screen when the rom is loaded.

Anyway, the 0.106 vids have been done.  There are 2907 out of 3316 (409 unplayable or unable to capture) games with vids.  I created the torrent and a dat file (using clrmame dir2dat) this morning.  Will check that the dat works correctly with the set before posting them both on [romsite name redacted].  Estimating it will be uploaded in about 10 hours.

Cheers

What if you just added something to your FE such that if the video is not found it gives you the ability to generate it? Perhaps as a separate menu option since you wouldn't want this to be asking you to create videos while actually running the FE.
