Been pulling down the [romsite name redacted] torrents over the holiday. Just shut down my #-M seed this morning, as it had seemed to be inactive for a while. I'll update to the latest and start seeding again.

I have proposed on the forum that I update the [romsite name redacted] torrent for circo so then he doesn't have to wait to leech first off ---No torrents please - thanks!--- before creating the new torrent. However I've had no comments at all on the proposal. Perhaps if you guys added your comments to that thread then maybe a mod will listen. Just use your username and password from the site to get on the forum.

I've been using ---No torrents please - thanks!--- this whole time, but would like to switch to [romsite name redacted]. Do I have to download the entire pack if I switch over?

Also- I read all about getting 'poop'-listed for leeching. IF I were to switch over, I'd have to download a HUGE file my first round. How do I do that and NOT get on the list as a leecher? Or, will they allow me to download that HUGE file, then turn around and seed it back up for a while so that my ratio is back in order?

Can someone walk me through this process please? I'd appreciate it!

No you don't have to start over. Create a folder called "MAME098 Game AVI Previews" and move all your current folders inside of it keeping each set in is currently named folder. Then point the torrent to the "MAME098 Game AVI Previews" folder. When the torrent starts it should say hash checking and then start at about 75%, give or take depending on how many sets you already have.

Now- what about the seeding/leeching part? How do I avoid getting listed as a leecher? Can I download the next pack, and then turn around and upload it back up to gete my ratios in check, or- upload/seed first, then download?

Also- on the same topic- if noone uses me to download from while i'm seeding, does it still count towards my ratio, or only when someone is currently downloading off of me?

ok silly question here- but- I'm confused.

When I goto the [romsite name redacted] site- which file do I choose to do this? There seems to be 4 or 5 different torrent files to download. If I already have the other packs from the other site, which file do I choose to update with any new packs that come out?

There is just one torrent file currently titled
MAME098 Game AVI Previews #-M
Once you have finished updating your pack, just leave it running for anyone else to download from. Unfortunately that pack doesn't have the latest N,O,Q yet.
Remember to have all those individual folders inside a main folder
MAME098 #0-9
MAME098 A
etc
etc
otherwise you'll end up downloading it all again

ahhh- ok. So, I downloaded that, it went through some sort of 'check' on the file. It finished, and not I'm seeding it. Is that all I need to do, and then just wait for more updates? If/when it updates, will it automatically download the new files? Man that's cool...

Can someone answer my question on the ratios? Do I only get credit for when someone is actually downloading from me? Or, do I get credit for seeding, even tho no one's using it?

I thought something was wrong with my setup so I tried to download some linux thing and that worked fine.

credit is given for uploading not just idling as a seeder. Is it showing that you have got 100% of the torrent? You should also see something like 10 seeders seen recently. When the torrent is updated a new .torrent file is created. You will need to close the current torrent, download and open the new one. It will then begin to get the new information, and as new people join the torrent you may then be able to share the upload to them until everyone get's updated.

Yeah, I am using Azureus. It's sitting in the bottom pane window, marked as 1st Priority, Seeding, 1.73GB, Seeds 0(12), etc etc. Tracker Status is OK. No one is downloading right now- but it's acting as if I did it right, already have downloaded all the files, and is just waiting for someone to download. Is this right?

What site are you talking about - [romsite name redacted] or ---No torrents please - thanks!---? If it's [romsite name redacted], i guess you are registered and it will just download off the seeders, it's best to stay connected after the download is finished as they monitor ratios and ban heavy leechers. If it's ---No torrents please - thanks!--- it may be there's no seeders around for the packs you are trying to get - post the packs and people will then reopen the torrents.

Even with the limited trafic you are looking at a minimum of 75 to 100 gigs of bandwidth a month to host this on a website for download. In reality it would probably be much much more. And since there is no real way to get revenue off of these it would be very expensive to pay for all of that bandwidth.

I finally got around to downloading these. I have the #-M pack and am currently seeding on [romsite name redacted]. I should be able to keep this running pretty much nonstop until close to Christmas.

Ok - am currently talking with the guys over at [romsite name redacted] on what they require me to do with this vid pack. They are asking that each video get's zipped much like each rom which will reduce the overall size of the release. This would mean that everyone would also need to do the same with what they have downloaded so far. It seems to be a rule on their site that everyhting should be run through torrentzip but I guess as none of the mods had any interest in these packs, they never tried to download the torrent and therefore never saw the problem.

That seems kind of silly if you ask me. The final size of this pack probably won't even be as large as a standard DVD, and there are plenty of torrents out there of that size. I don't see a need to zip them all considering the size and the fact that we (you) are already half through the pack.

I'd ask them if you could keep it as is, since you are bound to create problems if you have to have everyone zip those files they already have.

Ok everyone - here is a brief tutorial on what you need to do to you avi files to prevent having to redownloading them. You will need to have winrar and torrentzip. The version of torrent zip I got was the win version. I unzipped the exe file into c:\documents and settings\[username]\Send To\ folder

You need to go into each of the avi folders, select all the avi files (ctrlr-A selects all files, then hold the ctrlr button and click on the txt file to unselect it)
Right click on the selected files and choose Add to Archive... (under winrar)
Compression method can stay as Normal
Select .ZIP format in the General Tab
I also selected delete files after archiving as I already had a copy of them elsewhere
Select Put each file to seperate archive in the Files Tab
Click OK
This will then produce individual zip files for each avi. Do this for each folder but remember not to zip the txt file as it's not required.
Once this is all done, right click on the main folder which has MAME098 #-0 and MAME098 A as subfolders
Select Send To - trrntzip.exe (or if you called it different)
This will then do a thorough check and rezip of all the files
and now your set will be exactly the same as mine.

Any problems just post here - remember you won't have to redownload anything if you have kept the original structure and followed the instructions above

hey fellas just wanted to drop a line that I have completed nonworking vids as well. So we will add this, so that when you select a nonworking game, it plays a small clip stating the game doesnt work. This will be the last pack we add after all letters are added and completed.

The torrentzip operation is a one time thing only. cdbrown basically changed the internal structure of the torrent to make it smaller.
For next releases of the torrent, you will simply have to download the "new" torrent, it will check what you already have and download what's missing.
That's what [romsite name redacted] does for ROM torrents for example, so you don;t redownload everything when a new version of mame comes out.

I personnaly like it even though it's a pain to go through it the first time. People that have downlaoded nothing yet don;t have to worry about it either.

Yeah but how are supposed to use the AVI's when they are zipped up. Roms work when they are zipped, video's do not. We will need to manually unzip each and every file. What am I missing here?

I download everything on a different machine from my cab, and I usually zip everything for archiving anyway, so this format doesn't bother me, but I can see your point.

I also download on a seperate machine and zip for archival. The zipping is the easy part. YOU will still need to unzip every AVI file to use it.

how do the files compress? I know MP3 files basically don;t compress at all, I would expect AVI files to be pretty efficient too.

I wanted to move to [romsite name redacted] because the tracker there is far more reliable. Everyone was having continual problems with the ---No torrents please - thanks!--- tracker. I am yet to have a timeout or unable to connect to tracker with [romsite name redacted], but I would about 80% of the time with ---No torrents please - thanks!---.

I tried to resist the zipping but the mods are fairly strict and continually asked me how I would set the torrent up before giving upload access. I guess you have been around there for a while circo so they just let you do what you need to do.

To get all these to work you need to extract each of the files to a single directory anyway, so instead of highlighting the files and dragging and dropping to a directory, highlight right click drag and drop - extract here. It's a little bit more time, but it's more than worth it for a good tracker.

1504 files compressed from 1.90GB to 1.80GB

It's embarrassing to admit but I wasn't aware that WinRar would unzip all the files withing a group of selected folders. Not a problem any more.
