3am EST is a daily server cleanup period. Most of the nightly items such as log custodian work, logwatch and other security cleanup, as well as a sync of the emerge system all happen around this time. I'll see if I can spread or speed up some of this. The high I/O is what is slowing down post and queries. I'm usually asleep by 3am so I never see it ;)
