Stick with 1/16" slot cutter.  Why you ask?
To center the slot in the wood, make sure to flip the piece over and recut the groove.  This makes the groove perfectly centered.  Usually you are just slightly off on trying to center the cutter, so you end up with a groove slightly larger than 1/16" cutter.
