When someone has shot at a house with kids in it, they should be roughed up.

What, you think your house is "safe"?  What if you were driving like a bat outta hell, cops were chasing you, and they lost sight of you seconds before turning into your driveway?  No ticket because you weren't tagged out before reaching home?
Yes.  I believe cops can't enter your house unless invited or warrant.  That is the purpose of a warrant to uphold that one amendment.  But yes, he wasn't in his house in this case.
But in this registration case if it is ok to have an unregistered vehicle on your property then you just need to ask the cop if he has proof you were driving it unregistered and to produce it.  This is a country that still thinks innocent until proven guilty.

Quote
I got MANY tickets due to my breaking motor vehicle laws.  You don't hear me whinging on incessantly about it or asking if the cop was somehow wrong in giving me a ticket.  That's what "your day in court" is for.  Use it.  You'd be surprised how many "25 over" tickets end up becoming "defective speedometer" tickets, and if they weren't pulling over people at 3 a.m. for failing to signal, we might not have "COPS" to entertain us with endless car chases to the Mexican border on their rims.
Right, court is one way to reverse a ticket.  Another is to ask for the evidence of guilt.  If you get pulled over for speeding you better ask the officer for proof.  If they didn't have their radar turned on and you were just going faster than the rest of traffic they will probably leave you alone.

Here in ohio, if you are drinking, and go out and sit in your car (no keys, no engine on) you can be arrested and charged with DUI.

Bitten by the cabinet bug... obsessing ever since.

Then what exactly does DUI stand for?  It can't be Driving.

Sounds like a myth to me.

Same law applies in Oklahoma. You can be arrested for DUI for being in the driver's seat of a car while intoxicated, even if the car is not moving, or even running. I agree though. What does the D stand for?

Nah, I'd be down at Wal-Mart hassling the customer returns lady to exchange my PS2 because I have no problem hosing a complete stranger and wanting to foist my problems on someone else instead of being an adult and getting it fixed like a responsible member of society.

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that cops are pretty much worthless revenuers for the municipality that they work in.  They love to harass kids in cars, while complaining that the public is losing support for them.  Duhh.  They forgot that people remember what cops did to them when they were kids.  They appear as if out of nowhere for any traffic infraction, but take up to 2-3 hours to respond to a 911 call in my city.
I got a ticket in front of my house on the morning of Easter Sunday for being 7 miles over the speed limit.  I asked the cop how come they never respond to the neghborhoods complaints about cars doing doughnuts every Friday and Saturday night through our neighborhood.  His response..."We don't do traffic enforcement after 6:00pm."  WTF?
I went to court, knowing I would lose, just to vent about the doughnut and crime issues.  The judge said he understood my frustration and reduced my fine by 50%.  The cop gave me the laser stare, and I bet he just can't wait to see me again
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I agree with Geo, at the end of the month all I see is cops giving tickets or waiting to give tickets to make a quota, now that is in the suburbs. Chicago dosen't have quotas and the cops are generally real cool unless you cut them off bad.

Hallo, what ah can do for eewe :)

ok, I can see that then.  Here in WI it isn't uncommon to see old vehicles sit out on lawns growing weeds around them.

and you should see DREWS place!

I grow cars in my weeds?

Tell ya what though, once they figure out all the older classic cars are to be found in WI since we don't have THOSE dumb laws, some frog-lickin' dirt-eater will push for that law to be passed so we have to scrap all the cool cars.

Even if Seph had been in his house it would depend on the circumstances whether they would need a warrant to enter.  The Supreme Court has recognized a lot of exceptions to the 4th Amendment.  Hot pursuit is one of them.  So if, for example, the Cop called Seph over and instead of complying he made a break for his house, thinking that he'd be safe once inside, that cop would have walked right in after him.  Had he just been a little quicker and got inside before the cop was able to get there and talk to him he could have got away with it entirely by simply not answering the door (assuming that it's not illegal where he lives to have an unregistered vehicle parked in your driveway).

Same in the UK.  In fact I think if you are in a car and have the keys while drunk you can be done.

I've also heard of 2 people who pushed their motorbikes home as they'd been drinking and didn't want to ride, and they got done for drunk driving.  Even though they weren't driving.  Or even riding.  This kind of thing is what makes people hate the police...some of the time they are just doing their job but the a-hole ones just like to piss people off.

Funny you should say that. Here it is creeping up toward the end of the month. On the way home yesterday I saw three obvious speed traps and two cops who had already pulled someone over. Watch your speed until after the first of the month.

Yeah, it is bad when they enforce traffic laws.

I love seeing people pulled over.  They set up a speed trap right in front of my house every few weeks, always after dark.  I can tell when they have pulled someone over by the flashing lights in my living room.  I sit there with popcorn and watch.  I've seen them arrest people, impound cars, give sobriety tests.  I saw them searching one kid's car, the cop came out holding a baggie, and the kid ran into the woods.  20 seconds later they dragged him out of the woods with a nasty looking cut on his head.  Apparently he didn't know that those woods go straight uphill and lead to a bigass fence with water behind it.  It was like my own personal Cops.  Sobriety tests are a riot to watch in person.

I need to get a police scanner so I have better audio.

I always wanted to get one too. I think it would be much more entertaining on the drive home than the radio ever would be. :)

Bear in mind - a lot of municipalities have outlawed scanners in vehicles.  I had a cop try to take mine once, but when I showed him that it was full of ham radio stuff and not police freqs, he backed off.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???
