Arcade of the dead (new intro video!)
« on: September 16, 2005, 07:54:05 pm »
Wow! This is the post I wanted to make for a long time! Me and my mate finally began building the 2 monsters. Mine will be Arcade of the dead and his will be Arcade match up. I bought Saint's book and read it A to Z (awesome book by the way!). We broke our bank to bought all our stuff, and broke we are! We based our cabinets mainly on Lusid's one. Modifications we did is to bring the cabinet smaller. It was in our opinion taking lot of uneeded space (there is lot of free rooms on the control panel and the bottom is just really fat for whatever reasons). We are both in an appartment in Montreal Quebec so we dont have spaces to loose. We're doing this in team so I've done all the research for the hardware including controls, encoders, trackballs etc... And Pat (my mate) have the wood skillz :) So here is he measuring the first piece of wood.

And to be more precise on our measurments, we left 1/8 inches between all our pieces. That is exactly the widht of the blade we used to cut the wood. (why isnt said to left that space between pieces on Lusid and Saints book plan ?...)

And the final pic for now. Me holding a mockup of what will be the real thing. Look at the base and how big is the CP. Im happy with how it looks. So top of machine is the same as Lusid but we are saving space with bottom. Looking better on my own opinion... but then im biased because this is my own! mouhahaha!

I like the modification to the cabinet.  You are right, it is too large at the bottom.  Now yours looks a little like the Ultimate Arcade design.  The book somewhere does say to pay attention to the thickness of your blade, but it is in some obscure sentence.  I decided to only mark the next piece and then cut it.  Then measuring the next adjacent piece and then cutting it.  It was the lazy way to do it since I didn't have to deal with the thickness of the blade.  I just measured and cut.

Thats a good way too. Measurements takes a long time adding the 1/8 everywhere but worth it for precise cut. Also,  I left my plans at my buddy's house but I think I removed a good feet of that bottom...

Drinking and measuring is dangerous.  Check and recheck and then have your dog check those measurements.

whoa dude, you could be a model for "how not to be safe when  using a circular saw".  shirt off and bare foot?  wow.  i just want you to know that i managed to seriously damage my toe, and i wasnt even using a saw.  i dropped a sheet of 40" x 40" mdf on my right big toe.  oh man, it hurt.  i posted a picture of my toe a long time go with it all bandaged up, i'll try to find it to scare you into putting some shoes on at least.

WTF does dropping the wood on your toe have to do with safe use of a circular saw?

I did worked a lot on the artworks... and found out later I was at a 100 resolution. Some people say I have to redo it all, and im hoping there is another way cause that is too much work. You think I can still print a good picture at that resolution without redoing the whole thing ?

dmsuchy: I did put everyting together but didnt make the drawing. Everything comes from the flash animated movies Xombie. They are making a full lenght movie soon too so you'll hear about it :)

LOL.  I was wondering too.  I think it was just meant as a safety warning in general.  It is a pretty bad idea to use a saw barefoot and with no shirt.  But I guess it eliminates the possibility of getting a shirt tail or shoelace caught in the blade. ;)

The project looks great.  The space for the blade is the kerf.

Do you have any ideas for the CP overlay for arcade match up?

Im from Oz so i dont know much about grid iron but im thinking using those 'O' and 'X' and arrows they use to map out their game plays could look pretty good.

Just an idea.

cheers.

Knowing Nataq, I've seen him do far more dangerous things than using a saw barefoot and shirtless.

Of course, he wasn't doing the actual cutting... :) He just likes to drink beer.

4 years later...  :o

Yeah Ok we did took our sweet time to go on. Building two cabs at the same time wasnt really a great idea to start with and we had some hard times with our schedules. Still, we will finish someday! If it take another 4 years it will still be it!  ;D

Anyway, got some motivation lately and finally put together the control panel. The artwork has been redone completly because of bad resolution I had the first time. Still, it is pretty much the same. I have the wiring to do now and I will replace the yellow buttons by red ones.

No new pics of the cab but it is going well. Pretty much assembled now. Speakers holes to do, retainer and front door then paint, t-molding... haa it still looks like a long way to go. But we'll do it!

What do you think of the CP ? I am very satisfied!  ;D

Finally put some time again and did a bunch of stuff. I am to the point where I just need a glass in front of the monitor and do the final paint touchups. Machine runs beautifully and video looks pretty good on component out. I will also print out two MAME logos (the atomic one) for the side art.

I changed the buttons to fit the theme. I also replaced the super joysticks for red competition (IL). It feels way better for fighting game and pretty good for everything else. Good choice overall. I did had a curved 27" HAPP bezel and a 19". Since I changed the TV to a flat one I made a bezel from these 2 so now it is a "2 level" one... hard to explain but I needed the opening of the 19" for the TV and the height of the 27" one to fill the hole outside of TV. Looks good in my opinion. I was trying to achieve a good result or else I would have painted the glass I will put over monitor. No need for this now.

Here is some updated pics. I am so proud of it and I am surprise I could do something like that. I never build anything that big and good looking before :)

love everything about this one!

you did such a good job with the cpo and marquee.  seems a shame to use mame logos and not continue the "dead" theme with the sideart

Thank you  ;D

You are probably right about the side art. I should probably stick to the theme again. I was just thinking that since my cpo overlay and marquee are "removable" the MAME logos on the sides would always be accurate even if I decide to change the theme. None are sticked. Side art need to be stick though.

I will have to rethink about it. Dead side art wouldnt be hard to find since the art are already in flash (vector) and I can chose from a whole lot of pictures from the Xombie animated series.

Just received smoked glass and installed it. I am amazed at how it really enhanced my screen. I ordered 5mm smoked glass and was nervous to try since I already tought my TV was looking great with components inputs. I've read lots of people saying smoked glass was great but now I truly believe it. Picture is better now and monitor is not that hard to look at anymore (27" TV at 10" close to your face...).

Since glass is now mounted (I just had to layed it down, gravity hold it great on its own) I was able to mount my speaker grills as well for my final move!

CAB IS NOW COMPLETE! YAY!

Ok, I'll add some side art later but the thing still done and look complete.

I'll add some pictures later.

On another note, I have completed my cab intro movie based on the Xombie movie clips. If you look at my artwork it is just a continuity and is well suited to the cab. It looks awesome but I really just did add some text on a short clip. Still, awesome to run on the cab  ;D Take a look :
