Games you spent the most on as a kid
« on: August 26, 2005, 10:30:58 pm »
Between the ages of 11-18, I shudder to think how many quarters I pumped into various machines over the years.

What were the top 5 machines that took most of your money?

Me?

1. Asteroids. Every day after school we would line our quarters on the CP waiting for our turn. When you got the hang of it, you could play for hours.

2. Tron. Really, not a great game today by todays standards and from a gaming perspective, but definately had the "Attraction" back then.

3. Defender.

4. Galaxian down the street from Highschoold. Every lunchtime boy...

5. Tetris took quite a few from my childhood.

Vids:  Home built MAME machine, Crystal Castles. Arkanoid
Pins:   Williams Aztec (working). Stern Nugent (not working...yet), Williams Phoenix (major not working, missing parts.... )

Always on the lookout for buying 90's game with Ramps that need work...

*feels young instead of old, for a change*

Roadblasters, without a doubt.
I was something like 5, and it was in the entry to the grocery store. Every week I got a 1$ allowance. And every week, 4 quarters fell into the Roadblasters machine.

Sure it wasn't exactly astronomical sums of cash, but I did it a lot.

There weren't any arcades where I grew up.  The closest I came until later was the Satan's Hollow on the MS Scotia Prince.  I used to cross from NS to ME and back several times a year, and every time I would pour my lunch and dinner money into that one Satan's Hollow that was buried in a stairwell in the automobile decks of that boat.

Congorilla (Donkey Kong bootleg that was at corner deli)
Xevious
Moon Patrol (ironically I started playing this one past it's prime because it was always open and it ended up being one of my all time favorite games).
Robotron
Rescue (check this out in MAME, great twin stick game).
Karate Champ

I desperately wanted to get good at Stargate. I was never great at Defender, and when that corner deli got a Stargate in, I was ready to commit. Unfortunately, it must have had some great players at its previous location and the Op had the difficulty maxed... Can't remember exactly, but I seemed to play really fast and gave extra guys at 25,000. Needless to say, I STILL suck at Defender and Stargate.  ;D

Earliest days it was Moon Patrol and Peter Packrat.

Later it was Golden Axe, Moonwalker, Final Fight, and Ironman Ivan Stewarts Super Offroad.

Much later it became "Pump it Up", which I have probably spent close to $1000 on.

there were so many......

my bus stop for school was at this place called Tastee Freeze, they had a gameroom in the back so I spent my lunch money there everymorning. Super Mario Bros. was probibly the biggest money taker from me. I remember when nes came out and it came and I was thrilled that it came out with Super Mario Bros, but was quickly dissapointed to find that after level 6 (I think) that the worlds were completely different.

on another note the Tastee Freeze was the first bus stop for that bus I would miss the bus at least once a week because I was so busy playing that I didn't notice the bus picking everyone up until it was allready leaving. I would have to haul ass to the last bus stop across town to catch the bus........

Super Mario Bros.
Street Figher II

I played lots of games growing up (and am relatively young so many were really before my time), but those are the only two that I fell in love with and squandered ever cent I could scratch up on.

Was that the lame Sega holgraphic 'shooter' game?  I didn't like that one at all.  It was a novelty for about 5 minutes for me.  I couldn't stand that one!

Gladiator
Growl
Double Dragon
Paperboy
Golden Axe II

Probably in that order.  I used to stop at this little corner store on the way to school everyday and drop whatever change I had scrounged up into Gladiator.  After a while, they replaced it with Paperboy, which I played a lot but could get a lot further on one quarter so I probably ended up spending less.  Growl and Double Dragon were at my junior high hangout, this pizza place named (originally enough) the Pizza Shop.  My buddy Mike and I would buy a couple of slices of pizza, a couple of Cokes, and drop a couple of bucks worth of quarters into one of those two games.  After the Pizza Shop closed, we'd go over to the game room of this local hotel, where they had a ton of bad games (like Pit Fighter), but they had a few decent pinball machines and Golden Axe II.

Can I answer "All of them"?

First exposure to games was in a convenience store... I would bring in the $10 I got as birthday money, intending to spend $1, next thing you know I spent it all. On SUPER COBRA and KICKMAN! Ack!

First time I played Gauntlet with 3 other players, I think I dumped $6 into it (sounds like nothing these days, but that's 6 x 4 = 24 credits in one session).

This is tough because play time on, say Robotron (at which I am good) does not corelate to quarters pumped into an equal amount of, say Asteroids (at which I suck).

Defender (because I was an adict)
Ms. Pacman (becasue they were everywhere long after arcade games were the in thing)
Robotron (because, you know, you've got to save the last human family)
Joust (becasue there was one in my freshman dorm)
Space Invaders (because it was first)

I was about 18 when gauntlet came out and to some degree beyond my arcade peak.  A few friends and I pumped at least $30 bucks into that beast one night.

I would say that other memorable pocket drainers were:

Phoenix
Tempest
Blastroids
Major Havoc
Dragons Lair
SubRoc
Donkey Kong JR
Missile Command
Super Sprint - In Progress ($150)
Moon Patrol MAME - Completed ($670)
Tic-Tac-Strike Puck Bowler - Restored ($1200)

I didn't think I was that young, but maybe I am...most of the games listed here weren't even in the arcade when I used to go.   Here were the ones that took my money:

1. Mortal Kombat
2. TMNT
3. Street Fighter 2
4. Cruisin' USA
5. Ridge Racer

Pac-Man
Donkey Kong
Battle Zone
Dragon's Lair, (mostly because it was 50 cents a play versus 25 for everything else)
Gauntlet(!)
