Nice.

Tell them I'll take it but I won't be able to pick it up until February and could they store it in their basement until I can stop by and pick it up.  Also, if they could pick up the paddles for me and I'll pay them when I pick it up, that'd be super, mmkay? :P

Sounds like a better way to spend a Sunday morning than at a traditional flea market digging for dust old games and records.

I would post Drew's fat lady sitting on park bench with gut hanging out, but that would be too much work.
Vids:  Home built MAME machine, Crystal Castles. Arkanoid
Pins:   Williams Aztec (working). Stern Nugent (not working...yet), Williams Phoenix (major not working, missing parts.... )

Always on the lookout for buying 90's game with Ramps that need work...

Hey Chad, I just got a reply that they're willing to let me start a group for my city and immediate suburbs around it.  What are some things you can tell me with your experiences running a group that you've seen fit to institute "rules" for (obviously still keeping with Freecycle's standard rules) or have changed after seeing how things were or weren't working?

The only thing I H-A-T-E about one of the groups I'm part of is the enormous amount of "wanted (but can't read what it is in the header)" and "check out this list" posts.  I want to know, BANG! right when viewing the brief listing on top of e-mailings if something's in that group of stuff I'd like to see, not a "Wanted" and having to scroll down to see if I can help them out, or the list of crap that may turn out to be just that, a list of crap.

Other stuff you've experienced....I'd like to start with a good base, not "let's see how it goes and work from there"

Just go with the standard freecycle rules... they're decent.  If you see too many of those postings on your own list, send a friendly reminder fairly often about how a post should be formatted.  People usually comply.  If a person regularly does not comply then contact them privately.  Honestly, the list will mostly run itself, and will probably pick up at least one "freecycle cop" that points out every violation as if you didn't see it yourself.

I have a couple of ways that I differ from the standard Freecycle rules, but the only major one that pops into my head at the moment is that my list is moderated.  Being around my email inbox from 8-5 m-f and not that far from it most weekends and nights makes it pretty easy.  Yahoo emails you an email for each entry, you eyeball it quickly, hit reply and send without editing.  Or you can approve stuff from the website.  Either way, I find moderating to be little trouble and lets even less crap through to the list.  The reason they usually say "no moderation except on new members" is because people sometimes do that to get first crack at the stuff, and some have even takena a large % to sell on ebay or something.  I have taken so few items from my own list that it's not an issue here and I am still the person on my list that offers the most items.

The setup and approval process is a PITA, but once you're up and running, there is actually very little to do other than the occasional member question, especially if you don't moderate the whole membership.

People really seem to like the concept and whenever I meet one of my members they always thank me and tell me how much they appreciate the effort.  I use the list a lot myself but only sign as Owner or Moderator when actually acting in that role.  If I'm offering or asking for an item I just sign with my name.

Thanks a bunch.  :)

It sounds as if it's just about done, the woman who contacted me said she was sorry she didn't get back to me sooner (I applied for a group before Thanksgiving, I think) and if I was still interested, she'd be more than happy to start a new group.

The area I'm looking to cover is so friggen big I can't believe someone hasn't thought of starting another group before me ::)  The major city (Milwaukee) could be split into TWO groups, it's so friggen wide and far reaching, so another group to serve the suburban area seems way overdue.

When I set up my group they said they wanted each group to cover an area with about 30,000 people in it, if that helps.

I used to be on the MA mods email list and the Freecycle(anywhere) mods email list but I found two things:  The MA mods whined too much about how much work it was when it is almost none, and the overall mods list was all people completely incapable of making a moderative decision on their own.

Friday, in Freecycle Columbus, someone posted "OFFER: Full sized arcade Ms. Pacman Machine.  No longer working, but did when we put it out in the garage last year."

That was posted at 11:27.

at 11:31, "Taken: Ms Pacman machine"

I logged in to check my mail at 11:45.

Heh.

Keep in mind that on lists where people are required to post OFFERs before they can post WANTEDs, people will often post a fake OFFER and then immediately post a TAKEN.

Why more of them don't wait a day to make it look better, I have no idea.

They just don't want to receive the serious responses that they'd get by leaving it available for any reasonable amount of time.

They can ignore those, though, with no consequences.  Doing it the short way just makes it obvious to the moderator.

Not that most moderators will bother doing anything about it, including myself.

Because, you know, when you want something a secret, the best way to announce it is to tell everyone and ask them all to be quiet about it.

I really feel sorry for the kid if she has one. The woman is too cheap to buy a test?!? The kid will be lucky to have clothes and a roof over it's head.

"Mommy, I'm hungry."

"I will put a wanted listing on freecycle and see what I can do."
