Freecycle
« on: July 27, 2005, 09:34:51 am »

For those who don't know.

Some of the awesomeness that comes across Freecycle amazes me sometimes.  I have picked up a ton of awesome, and of course free, stuff.

This week I saw both an OFFER and TAKEN for a 1969 Ford Mustang.   :o

Very cool chad. I have never heard of this. With Craigslist I got an old 50's Pepsi machine but had to drive across LA. I love free. Thanks man. ;D

You don't need a spam account, just set up a rule filter.  I mean aren't we past the 33.6k days of 100 emails being a real problem?

w00t.  I'm heading over on Sunday to a local woman's house... she says she's cleaning out her parents' house and that her father was an electrician/TV repair guy by trade.  She has a lot of "electrical repair equipment" that she isn't familiar with but needs to go...

...if it works out, it's like the 5th time I've gotten cool stuff like this from someone who is clearing out the possessions of a newly deceased parent.  It's a little oogy, but better than chucking them in the trash, I guess.

Holy crap, people are coming out of the woodwork with older, but supposedly still very functional, electronics repair equipment.  I may end up with way more than I need here.

If I end up with too much, the extra could be distributed to folks who want to pay shipping and buy me a beer.

Uh, yeah.  Today, was invited to take what I wanted from a house where the resident was very elderly and could no longer use the stuff, was moving in with the family.

Apparently, the guy is a former Navy Electrician.  There was stuff in there I had no idea what it is... but, I came away with a whole car load of older test equipment.  Two oscilloscopes, a couple capacitor testors, a couple transistor testors, variable power supplies of a couple natures, a CRT tester, an oscilloscope calibrator, a couple other things I'm not sure what they are yet and a couple more that I'm not remembering off the top of my head.

Clearly, I don't need it all.  When I figure out what I want to keep, and it will probably be half or less of the stuff, I'll be distributing the rest to members.

Haven't had the chance to look at them closely yet... they're pretty old, but in excellent shape, and many have the manuals.  I know the cap testers, for instance, have settings for all kinds of caps, as if electrolytics are a newish kind.

What I wanted most, though, I did get... a nice, fairly new oscilloscope with a good screen.  The other one is definitely older but probably very functional.

Folks who have helped me in the past are, accordingly, first in line to snag stuff they have use for... those folks know who they are, so feel free to PM me if you see anything you'd like as it gets listed.  If none of those folks claims an item, it will then be up for grabs to the general BYOAC population for the cost of shipping and beer.

Another, scroll down to the B+K 520B.

Note, I'm not showing the ones that are available, just ones I got.  I haven't gone through the stuff yet to see what to keep, and these are only a couple that I wrote down the model #s for...

It probably will be kept, at least in the short term, until I learn to use the Oscope and decide I don't need the calibrator.

If it's a one time use type item, you could certainly borrow it.  The calibrator isn't heavy and would only cost a few bucks to ship.

There are two, I don't have the model #s with me.  One is modern looking, as far as I can tell so far, and the other looks much older with a smaller, round screen.  There was a third there but I didn't take it as the guy wasn't sure if his brother wanted it and the cover was missing, leaving the CRT exposed.

I'm figuring if it does nothing else, this stuff will greatly increase my knowledge as I simply figure out how to use it.

Damn! Just missed out on a Fooseball table. I posted, but someone got there quicker than me!!!

Kinda like an Auction, you gotta be Johny-on-the-spot and be the first one to ask for something if you stand a chance of getting something.

It also seems up to the "givers" discretion to give it to you, so I think ya gotta be nice in your e-mail...

It is up to the givers.  Most people give to the first responder, some wait 24 hours and choose from the pool.  I will often give to the first person who says they can pick up within the next day.

Last week I saw someone post a Vectrex.  I tried but someone else got it.  This morning I saw an "old but working PS2" posted.
