Sorry Santoro, I don't know how to edit a poll.

For my submissions, can you use the steering wheel w/o the 'wrapped' wheel effect?  I feel the un-wrapped wheel is more arcade-like.  I've never seen a 'wrapped' arcade wheel!  I thought the wrapped one looked neat but isn't appropriate for an arcade wheel.

Also, my front design for the token is a 'gauge' not a 'guage' (is that French?)!   8)  Or just call it speedometer.

Thanks

Did I lose control of player 1 guy, or does timstuff get the credit because I based it on his design?

:'(  Where's da luv?   :'(

Ok, I thought my design was innovative, but I see that I'm the only one that thinks so...that's ok...I'll just drown my sorrows in another pitcher of daquiris...sniff...

C'MON!  Check out the arcade wheel & the speedometer combo!  THAT'S COOL!  Ya don't want another token with a big cab on it, do ya?  Ya it's a great design, but we've already got a bunch of those!  Hmmm...let's see - this one has...a cab on it.  That one over there...has a cab on it.  The one in my pocket...has a cab on it... :P

Let's try something different!  NO LIMITS!  RUSH HOUR BABY!  Just think what your friends would say when they see this friggin slammin' token!  You'll have to beat 'em back with a club!  Instant collectors item!  8)

Not to be picky, but I just dont' see what the whole car vibe has to do with BYOAC and/or a MAME machine.  Most people with Mame cabs don't have dedicated wheels and pedals for racing games, and for the most part, people don't build cabs to play racing games... its always classics or fighters or whatever... very rarely do I see someone build an upright cuz they just have to play a racing game.

I like your designs, but don't see where they really fit in.   :)

I thought BYOAC stood for 'Build Your Own Arcade Controls', not 'Build Your Own Arcade Cabinet'!

What?  Never played Pole Position?  Super Sprint?  Turbo?  APB?  Out Run?  Final Lap?  The 'car vibe' is a tribute to these and other classic racers, brudda!  (Maybe the pic below will help...)

I know that racing cabs are rare.  I was just going for different is all.  Next time I'll submit a design with a cab on it!   8)

Of course I play them, and I like them a lot.  Truth be told, I'm a car nut even before a fan of arcade controls, so I really like your designs.  I just don't see them being very popular for the BYOAC crowd, which leans very heavily towards non-driving games.

What's with that angle in the bottom-left of the Joystick Jerk Joystick design?  If it's supposed to be a view of a CP from slightly overhead, then the controls should appear in the middle of the panel, rather than right at the front edge...

The number of levels on the cocktail wouldn't pose a problem.

Also... forgot to disclaim technical mumbo jumbo on my cab design for anyone looking at its levels:

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but I'll give it a shot.

Question's kind of basic.  The illustration of the cab makes it look like a perspective shot of the corner of the CP from above - but the joystick and button are drawn from the side.

Quote
It's not supposed to be a view of a CP from slightly overhead.  It's the view of a cp from "CP eye level" and the angle up at the  bottom left of the inner-circle is the (I presume) monitor/screen glass.

Angle seems kind of low for that...  and what's the vertical line for, then?

I think you're seeing the white area as the control panel.  The black angled area on the left is the angled area where the monitor would be.  The lower black area is the actual control panel seen from the side.  The vertical line just shows the distinction between control panel and monitor/rest of cab.  The joy and buttons are standing up because the view is as if you were staring at the side of the control panel at eye level.

That's how I see it anyway.

Does anyone else have problems picking up their tokens off of flat surfaces?

Like, when I set my tokens on a table or something, they are so flat on the edges that I cant get my gingers under them.

Maybe we could chamfer the edges a little like on a quarter?

Does anyone else have problems picking up their tokens off of flat surfaces?

Like, when I set my tokens on a table or something, they are so flat on the edges that I cant get my gingers under them.

Maybe we could chamfer the edges a little like on a quarter?

Just chew gum while playing games, and if you need to pick up a token, use the gum to pick it up.

Chewing gum is really gross; chewing gum I hate the most.

Come on cocktail design!  Vote cocktail in 2005!

That wasn't a token design, it was a picture.  The instructions were clear about using balck and white, gray to represent levels,  etc...

I took it as a tongue-in-cheek entry.  If it was serious, the entry wasn't compliant with the rules.

Santoro-

Will there be a run-off election between the big vote getters?

This gives folks who voted for designs that are obviously not going to win their voice back, and allows folks who  voted for 3 of the frontrunners a chance to say which of their previous picks they really, really want.

As an example, my votes were for Troz, Pixel, and Pixel- but what I really wanted was a Pixel design on one side, and the Troz design on the other.  But since my three votes couldn't be weighted, that third vote effectively strengthened the chance for a Pixel/Pixel token, which wasn't really my intention.

If you decide to do it, I'd only run it for a few days, and give everybody only one vote.  Let the winner of that poll take one side.  Then run another poll for the other side.  This way, when people vote for the 2nd side, they already know what's going to be on the 1st side, and can take that into account when they vote.

On the other hand, that's two more polls to go through.  Better democracy, but more hassle.  Your choice.

No matter what, thanks!

Instead let's discuss here as a group.  At first glance I am not sure if that would be fair to those who'won' the first poll.

haha you said "big pole" ;)

I think a vote for front and back after this is a good idea.  Take the top winners here and have a one vote "front" poll.  Then take the remaining options for the back and do a poll.  That way, at least in theory, the two most popular (of any choices at the time) will have won.

If we do repoll, lets do it before Aug. 6th. Like, maybe.... now. It seems clear which the options would be at this point. It'd be a shame to loose momentum by dragging it on only to start polling again. Plus I'm already ready to start ordering already. :P

Why have another poll?  If anybody here voted for all the top 3 they can remove their votes and cast only 2 for the ones they want out of the 3.  The same goes for anyone that used one or more of their votes on a design that doesn't have a chance of winning at this point.

Besides that everyone that wants the cocktail design to win will want another poll and everyone who likes both of pixels designs will not want another poll.  I for instance would rather you minted them immediately based on the current results ;)

Edit:  Oh yeah, and if you do re-poll you might as well just do a single poll against Troz's design and pixel's 3d cab since the other pixel design is a shoe in already.  No sense in making 2 more polls.

I am just bothered about changing the rules in the middle of the poll.  If there are 2 winners , even if by a narrow margin, why would we not just use the winners?  This sort of smacks of the Al Gore recount debacle.  'Mine lost by a narrow margin, so I want to count another way.'

See my point?

Because the second place may not be the groups first choice to complete the token.     Let first place have side 1 and then vote for side two.  There are enough votes to see where this is goings so the second poll would really just be a question as to whether the group wants a pixel/pixel or a pixel/troz.  I don't think this poll can answer that question.

If something crazy were to happen with the voting and one of the lower vote styles flew to the top.  I would want to vote again so that I could match the second side to the first.  I acctually changed my vote for this very reason.

See your point.  I'm not trying to subvert the process, I'm just concerned that the 3 vote system we used may not provide the true "will of the people".  In the Presidential race, we've got the primaries and then a real election.  The reason for the primaries is to determine the real candidates, so that in the final election, folks get to choose between the guys that have the best chance of winning, instead of throwing the votes away on candidates that don't have a chance.  Same thing applies here.  We've currently got 49 votes spread over the obvious non-candidates, out of a total of 357 total votes.  (119 voters x 3 votes = 357)

And then there's the possibillity of ending up with the wrong side1 / side2 combo.  Some folks willy think that an all Pixel token looks consistent and see that as a good thing, while others will think that the two sides ought to come from different artists.   If the current poll is the end of the process, you can't take into account which designs folks think go best with each other.  A two-part run-off takes care of that.

Edit:  Oh yeah, and if you do re-poll you might as well just do a single poll against Troz's design and pixel's 3d cab since the other pixel design is a shoe in already.  No sense in making 2 more polls.

Maybe.  But then again, how many of the votes that are currently on non-contenders might go to Pixel's upright if given the chance?  I dunno.

-----------------------

Anyway, that's my position.  But I'm not blind to the fact that it's extra work, and may step on some toes.  I won't be a crybaby if you decide not to do it.  Whichever way it goes- Thanks, Dave, for all the hard work you put in on these, and sorry if I've just added to the headache.  And I look forward to ordering, no matter how it comes out.

repoll the top contenders??? could work.

Too bad we cant do these polls like Aussie voting. Basically the aussie voting system is a bit like this:

Number the candidates in order of your preference.

1 pixel design

3 coctail design

2 upright design

4 driving design

etc etc. By the way this is no indication of the designs I want to win.

Seems like a repoll should be done, if for no other reason than for people to know their votes counted as they intended. Regardless of any toes getting stepped on, it would be worse to end up with a token that some consider unfairly "elected."

I just changed my votes.  I've only got two selected.  I'd like to suggest that folks consider Troz's Cocktail   for the front and Pixel's '3d Cab View' for the reverse.  I think they balance nicely.

Pixel's 3d cab is my favorite, but I'm not voting for it.  I want to see a pixel/troz token so I can't vore for it.  troz and 3d are just too close.

My 2 tokens worth...

Pixel's "button logo" design is a foregone winner.  With this as part of my consideration:

I like Troz's "cocktail" design, however, Pixel's "upright" design is consistent with his "button logo" design with respect to the outer rim which would make them a good match.  Further, Pixel's "upright" design is made for the back side of a token with the text: "One Credit - No Cash Value."  I wouldn't want the same text on both sides of the token: BYOAC and this websites URL.

So, I voted for Pixel's designs.  If Troz was willing to consider altering his design to fit with Pixel's format and text, I would love Troz's cocktail on the back.  Of course, the problem with altering the design at this stage is the same as the problem with running another poll.

Oh well, I am new here and don't have any previous tokens, so an upright cab would be new to me anyway :)
Read to your kids, you'll all be better for it.

From what I understand the text is subject to change depending on the winner..............

so you should not vote just on the text........

I think that we should be voting on the graphic design.   Text could change if required.  If both winners have the URL for example, I think tweaks would be in order.

Since the button logo appears to be the clear leader and a very close race for second between the upright and cocktail, with a lot of votes for each, what about doing 2 sets of tokens?  One set button/cocktail and one set button/upright.  Just a thought.

In a perfect world that would be cool.  But given the minimum token orders from tha mint and small market for these, that would be impossible in practicality.

I think that we should be voting on the graphic design.   Text could change if required.  If both winners have the URL for example, I think tweaks would be in order.

I really want troz's design to win. Come on peole change ya votes so troz's coctail is one of the winners. ;)

I think I might be the only person who isn't a huge fan of Pixel's button logo.  It's just a bit bland to me.

I really wish we could see a 3d cab/cocktail token, but like they say... you can't please everybody all the time.

Me too.

A note on the voting structure itself.  I am very surprised at how it  is actually working.  We are essentially having 2 elections because of removal option and the extended time to use it.  After the first rush we knew which were conttenders then  the vote changing started.  There has been a lot of very small movements between the two contenders for second place.  This shows that a lot of people are changing their votes strategically to lean second place one way or the other.

It has essentially created a runoff without a second poll...Brilliant.

I am not opposed to the button logo, i voted for it at first.  I just think the cab/cocktail combo would look awesome on a token.

Don't forget, though. The only thing standing in the way of the cocktail/upright token is that fact that the the button token is a clear winner so either the cocktail or the upright gets in, but not both.

So for those of ya'll saying how badly you want to see the cocktail and the upright, you're killing your chancees of ever seeing the cocktail at all by out-voting with the upright.

I would prefer the cocktail/upright combo as well.  As I really like the cocktail I have removed my vote for the upright in an effort to give the cocktail a better chance.

Funny way of voting but I guess you won't please everyone.

See the top of the poll:   "(Voting closes: August 06, 2005, 05:21:42 PM)"

I believe the poll will close itself after that.  I just told it to go 2 weeks.

BU.... LIIIIIIIIING.

Click on the link below the image to see at full size. These are rough APPROXIMATIONS of what the designs would look like in metal.

I'm guessing that unless a whole lotta people order nickel (there's a 10,000 coin minimum on nickel) the brass would probably be the only option.

EDIT: DOH! Forgot the date again. Guessing it'll go on the back.

Yeah, it's extremely difficult to judge the designs in black and white. I had thought about offering to bling all the submissions prior to the vote but based on how long these took (big chunk of free time last night and a dangerously long time at work this morning), it would've been impossible. The cocktail would have looked great blinged however. Especially the version with the front edge protruding onto the rim of the token.

God that's gorgeous.

Anyway - I am working out a few pricing scenarios tonight and will post a quick (1-2 day) poll to gauge the metal combinations that will likely sell best.  Based on that I'll pick a scenario and start pre-orders.

You know, I seriously think the reason the design threads were on the dull side this year is exactly because we did not allow 'bling.'  Seeing the blinged pics got me real exited about tokens again.

Note to self.. maybe next year we could get someone to post generic instructions for blinging in Photoshop and Paintshop Pro so that anyone can do it with moderate tools.  Well we have another year to think about it....

OK Gang, Preordering is open!!!!!

http://www.arcadetokens.com/html/2005_byoac_tokens.html

A few notes for the newbies

I don't sell batches of less than 200 for the first few months to maximize sales and reduce the risk of being stuck with unsold tokens.  It has worked well in the past and I won't negotiate it.   You can probably expect 100 lots in November and samplers in December or Jan.  If we break even sooner than expected, we can possibly accelerate that schedule.

Please don't offer to sell your tokens in smaller lots anywhere.  That just increases the chances I will get stuck with unsold tokens and never be motivated to do this again.  It's a boatload of work for a small profit.

I will post this in a new note in Buy/Sell/Trade Also.

I really REALLY want my nickel tokens :)  Although I'd probably get a 100/100 split.

Is there anyway to order 100/100 but let you know I'd go for all Nickel if it helped the numbers at all.  I'd rather have 200 Nickel than none at all :(

I think I will know within two weeks what the preorders are telling me in terms of whether we have critical mass to place an order, and for what combination of metals.

From the date of order, it usually takes about three weeks for the tokens to arrive here.  Then another week for us to get the first batch packed and dropped at the post office for Express Mail delivery (usually)

So best case - six weeks.  There are lots of things that can happen along the way to delay - mistakes in the dies, etc.  But hopefully that will not happen.

So what would you suggest for people like myself who want nickel?  I know it's really early, but can you judge by past experience what chances we have of getting nickel?

Like I said, I'd prefer 100/100, but if 200 Nickel would help them get ordered in the first place, I'd obviously do that.

Thanks Santoro. Placed my pre-order regardless of your answer, but was curious of the turnaround time.

Pre-order placed. Congrats to Pixelhugger on winning the logo contest. My comment wasn't meant to be an insult, just a "support the general community" comment.

Thanks. For the record, I agree with your comment. I almost withdrew my second vote as a result. Next year I think each side of the token should represent a different artist. I probably won't submit any designs next go round. Instead I'll sit back and help bling entries so everyone can see how the designs would look in metal, since, as Santoro pointed out, it's more interesting to see all the shininess.

Me too. If we get within 1000 of the nickel minimum I'm going to order as many as it takes to reach it.  ;D That said... it's gonna be a long shot. We'd need 2/3's of the people who voted to buy 100/100 splits. So.... get your nickel orders in! :police:

Well I guess that answers my question up above.. it's probably better for me to order 200 nickel instead of the split...

i'm trying to decide which metal i would want. brass or nickel, don't want the mix.

also how big and thick is the token compared to quarters?

also anybody got the photo of your 2004 brass and nickel token? just to see what lettering and pics look like on different colors

edit: also i was thinking about getting brass because many arcades i went to in the past used brass tokens so...

I'm interested in buying at least 200 nickel tokens but would be willing to buy 500 if it is needed to make the nickel ones happen. I haven't preordered them yet as I'm only interested in the nickel ones and it isn't known yet if the nickel ones will be made. I'm curious as to how close we are.

Do they charge you right away when you preorder or are they waiting untill the tokens are a sure thing to charge you?

Ok - so are all of the tokens sold and accounted for? I see that this is still a sticky and people have ordered tokens after they were declared as being sold-out.

Don't confuse the MAME tokens with the new BYOAC tokens..  The MAME tokens are sold out, the new BYOAC tokens will be available for a long time, I have only sold a little more than half of what I ordered.

Best estimate for token delivery is still 2-3 weeks, I still havent't seen the test samples from the mint.

Update.  I sent this note to those who ordered the 05 BYOAC Tokens.

There has been a 2-3 week delay in the manufacturing to the tokens due to an email SNAFU with the mint.  The email address that they used in the past seems to have gone to a black hole and I found out yesterday that they did not recieve the order I sent, nor subsequest requests for status.

Please accept my apologies for this delay.  The mint has promised to do what they can to expedite in order to make up lost time.

Update:

The mint just told me that I will have the proofs in hand on Monday.  Assuming everything looks OK, I will have the Brass Tokens one week later and the Nickel tokens one week after the brass.

As soon as we have the tokens in hand required to fill your order, we will begin shipping in order of order receipt date.  It will probably be a little less than a week after receipt to get all orders out.

The only potential source of delay might be if there is an error in the proofs, that could add another week or so.  They have been pretty good in the past, so we will keep our fingers crossed.

I can hardly believe it but we are almost out of Nickel. I know I said that these would be available for months, it certainly seems I was wrong.

I have some left, but I took them off the website so I didn't get too many orders.  PM me if you want Nickel tokens.  As soon as I know how many I have left I will allocate them in order of recieved PMs.  I will work out the paypal details with the winners via PM.

Seriously though, I'd like to suggest that the generic MAME tokens make a comeback appearance next year as well, I missed out on them and would love to get some when I swap my coin mechs.

Stay tuned.

if you rerun the mame in brass, i'll take at least 200. I missed out and only got nickel last time.

I'll take 200 brass MAME tokens.

You guys don't want to see a new design for the MAME tokens?

Santoro, is there any financial benefit (to us, the purchasers) if you do a 2nd run versus a new design?

I actually dig the existing MAME token design, I just missed out on the last run.  I'd definitely be interested in brass tokens.

I would assume a new mold would have to be made. Printing off of an existing mold would remove that cost.

That said, I'd go for 200 Mame tokens, as they sold out just before I went to order some.

If I were ever to re-run either set of BYOAC tokens, I'd do it for less money than the first time around because they were a "community effort" with the artwork in effect donated by the artists.

Got my 100 nickel and 100 brass today. Swift delivery to the UK.

Thanks great quality glad I decided to get some.

On balance the brass ones look sharper but this is probably due to them being less reflective than the nickel.

cheers
Cheers Eric

Well, I finally got mine today.  They look great!  Still kicking myself for missing out on brass though.

For those members in CANADA, can you tell me if Customs hit you up for $13.79 in taxes and "handling" fees or if you received the package directly without fees?

Overall, Customs Canada seems to be hit or miss on packages from the US and it is really annoying.  What originally cost $51US then becomes $63CAN due to exchange rate conversion and then it becomes $75CAN with these added fees.  Grrrrr.

Santoro, correct me if I am wrong, but these were sold as "non-commercial" were they not?  If I can provide information to support this I may be able to get a refund.

I didn't claim 'commercial' or 'non,' but I was asked to declare what they are and I say 'arcade tokens.'  A few people have requested that I say 'gift' on the outside to avoid additional charges, but international mail fraud isn't my thing.

Canadian shipments are without a doubt the most problematic so far - a few folks took weeks to get their deliveries.  I think they must inspect them more often than other countries.

Hi Santoro, thanks for the quick reply.  I didn't mean to ask you to commit mail fraud.  It's just that I may be able to get a refund if it was a "non-commercial" import.  I took from your description of MAME vs BYOAC tokens that the MAME was "commercial-for profit" while the BYOAC was not.  No worries if you are not comfortable with my request, I am very happy with the tokens and your service.  Just getting really annoyed at Customs Canada.

I have always found that in my dealings with Canadian mail that it is INDEED the most problematic of any country.

I was actually referring to a guy in 2004 who 'demanded' that I write 'gift' on the front...  I wasn't referring to you... No worries.
