Any suggestions for gameroom bits??
« on: July 02, 2005, 12:54:08 pm »
Ok in my gameroom (well spare bedroom with arcade machine in) I want to put some arcade related bits in it.  i've got an outrun marquee which i'm going to put on the wall, a Taito ashtray (for coins) and I'm gonna get some flyers printed.

any other suggestions for cool arcade related stuff? there's not any room left for any more machines  ;)

i went with the sportsbar look.  Autographed memorabilia, and some neon signs.  I also added a slot machine(takes up minimal room), and a bartop.
At least the fans go to hockey games "for the love of the game"........to bad the players don't!

i like the idea of 80's movie posters. late 80's and early 90's would be good for me (that's my arcade era)

i think the scarface poster is essential

I like to keep a good supply of the late 70's early 80's handheld games around.  The one's made by Mattel and Bambino.  They have plenty at local flea markets, usually under a buck.  Last one I got was a Pac Man handheld for a quarter.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

What about one of the great big 3d cardboard displays they put in movie theatres to advertise new films?

If I could re-create the arcades I remember and love, here's what I'd need:

-A beat-up payphone on the wall in the back corner.  A phonebook holder with no phonebook.
-A change machine with a dollar bill slot that rejects 1 out of 2 bills.
-A cardboard standup of an arcade attendant/change monkey.  Make sure he looks bored.
-Block out all the windows.  Put some can lights on a dimmer in the celing.  Don't turn the dimmer up.
-Gum in the carpet.  Dark carpet.
-Graffitti.  Not great big spraypaint stuff, just magic marker and knife work.
-A poster of a door in the back, opening on tiny room full of broken games & a fat guy watching a B&W TV.
-Signs everywhere prohibiting smoking, loitering, food, beverages, fighting, gambling, etc.
-Ciggarette butts, empty soda cups, empty candy bar wrappers.
-A trash can with a plastic lid that swings back so you can drop the trash in.  So full the lid won't swing.
-The change monkey should be standing right next to the garbage can.

great ideas although I don't think the wife would be keen  ;D

I like the idea of having a cardboard cutout of a change monkey/the mona lisa.

a saw someone selling a full size change booth on e-bay a few weeks ago.

He's not talking about the Coleco arcade tabletops.  No one at a flea would sell those for a quarter.

Oh, and depending on what ambience you were used to in your youth, you might need to hire some scumbag to walk around and whisper "pot, hash" as you're playing.

So that's the plan for all those games.

You're right ChadTower, I'm talking about the small LED games that fit in the palm of your hand.  I did get a Frogger tabletop for $7.00 once.  I also stumbled onto two large boxes of Atari 2600's at a flea market.  Got them both for $15.00.  After unpacking them I had 11 2600's (7 working right out of the box) and over a hundred games.  I took what I wanted and sold the rest on Ebay and made almost $600.00.  Flea markets are a gamers friend.  Look for the ones on college campus or at churches!
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I've always wanted one of those giant fiberglass amusement park trashcan lids for my gameroom.  Shaped like a Clown or a Hippo or a Lion.  Anyone ever see these?  I've searched for places online and have looked on eBay but have never seen them.  I imagine some of those Arcade Graveyards places might have something like this...

Pee-wee's Playhouse or Neverland Ranch?

Hey, Ray, I think I've got a Galaxian tabletop.  Condition Unknown.

I'll have a dig through the closet if you're interested.

If you're into the 80s scene my buddy put a room length shelf about 18" from the ceiling and placed a bunch of transformer figures, gobots, GI JOES, etc around the room.  I think it looks pretty cool and great way to display your toys!

You need a gum ball machine.

I used Arcade Marquees for a border around the ceiling.

Also, they had signs like "new game" and "don't sit on the tables" etc in game rooms.

Seal off all the windows, paint the walls and ceiling black, splatter UV paint on the walls, and bust out the black lights! (That may be a little overboard, though.)

A few weeks ago, we had bulky garbage pick-up day around here. In one of my neighbor's piles by the street, I spotted an old 10" fire alarm bell, very rusted but still cool. I took it home, got all the paint and rust off with emory cloth and naval jelly, and painted it fire engine red. I know have it hooked up to my pinball machine. ;D
