NBA jam poor performance

I love NBA JAM as well, and my old PIII-500MHz setup just didn't cut it.  Too slow to really play.  So I sold my cabinet, and I am doing a full rebuild with a new PC.  (AMD 2900+ so it runs great...  I know, not helpful.)

Anyway, the guy I sold it to wanted to play more games (not sure if he is a NBA JAM fan), so he dropped in a PC he had laying around.  It was just a Celeron 1.4GHz, and he has 512MB RAM (not sure of speed).  He tells me that NBA JAM works "just fine" on that setup.  I haven't seen it myself to see if it is 100% up to full speed, but he claims that it is good enough to play.

Hope that helps.

Just 15 seconds ago I tested an AMD Duron 1600 and it played NBA Jam full speed without a hiccup.

$AU 35 for a socket-A board, $AU 60 for 512MB DDR400 RAM and $AU 65 for the 1600MHz Duron CPU.

That's $AU 160 (roughly US$125 today according to xe.com) for a complete upgrade.  That's a fraction of what most people spend on a cabinet, or even a good night out.

My old computer had a 1.4ghz AMD Athlon (actual 1.4 ghz, before they moved to the "XP" naming scheme), 256 mb of ram, and a mid-range motherboard.  I believe MAME was around version .6-.7 at the time.  I could run NBA Jam, Hangtime, and Ultimate Hangtime at 100% easily.  Occasionally, the sound would get a little scratchy which might have indicated a need for more power.  At the time, the only game that I couldn't run well was Killer Instinct (and of course Cruisin' USA, et. al).
