Joysicks: the 3rd dimension

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and my main reason for coming here, is the fact I'm gonna build a control-panel for a modern arts installation together with a friend of mine, here in Holland.

For this project, you'll be sitting inside a dark caravan with a screen + control-panel in front of you, and 2 good speakers to your left and right ears. With the control panel you can manipulate the sound; switching loops ON-OFF (push-buttons/toggle-switches) and control ambientic sound FX (knobs, sliders and, most important, 2 joysticks). The control-panel shall also make the visuals (think (old) industrial machines ;D) change, in 'harmony' with the sound FX / rythmic loops.

So, I was wondering, maybe there's is someone around on this forum knowing very much about joysticks, and is able to tell me the following:

"Are there any 3-axis joysticks, where the Z-axis responds to the degree of vertical movement of the shaft of the joystick, rather than 'twisting the head' of the shaft, as seen in a lot of industrial 3-axis joysticks?"

Thanx guys!

Hey there, interesting sounding project.

I've dabbled in a few alternative PC controllers over the years.

Couldn't remember or find anything on the movable stick - anybody else remember it?  You could sorta slide it around.

This is the SpaceOrb.

Thanx, but we'll need a sturdier controller. I'll just keep on searching the net :)

Just had an idea - you could use a Wacom digitizing tablet.
