Subwoofer games
wpcmame:
Just installed a subwoofer in my cabinet. Mainly for modern PC games like Need For Speed Underground etc but tested it with some old mame games as well.
Most arcade games only use high-pitch sounds but asteroids is a completly new experience to play.
Any tips on other mame games where a subwoofer makes the game more fun to play?
paigeoliver:
Most games that had subs are going to be from the 77-80 era. After that they started cranking the games out cheap and they kept that up basically forever.
Another game that originally had a big sub in it was Sega Turbo.
Space War/s did not have a sub, but it does have a lot of low pitched sound.

I was surprised to find this out as well when I cracked open my MKII cab and found the sound system was composed of a 4-inch speaker and small 2-inch speaker. Presumably one was the woofer and one was the tweeter.
Although you can't really blame the cab makers as arcades were so loud you could barely make out the sounds of one game over the rest. No need for high-fidelity sound if no one can make it out.

BUP, bup, BUP, bup, BUP, bup.
It still gives me the willies. Space Invaders!

TOK beat me to the punch. I just got done playing Space Invaders and was going to add it to this list. Asteriods also sounds great with the bass cranked.
This is fun. I must look for more.
