Arcade of my youth (Redondo Beach Pier Fun Center)
« on: June 08, 2005, 03:42:25 am »
I took a trip down to the Redondo Beach pier today for the first time in many years. I was surprised to see my favorite local arcade was still running strong. This place is pretty massive, they have Video Games, Carnival games, A Tilt A Whirl and various other amusements. Luckily I had my trusty camera with me and managed to snap off 40 or so shots before I was run out of there by some gypsy woman. Here is a slide show and individual pics.

A Robotron/Joust...

TWO HERCULES.  I've never seen two in the same place before.  I just saw my first one in years this past weekend at Salisbury Beach (MA) but it was out of order, of course.  It seriously needed some love, yet for some reason was powered up.

Nice pics! That places does indeed look massive. I'm assuming it's a good bit different from when you played there as a kid. Care to tell us aobut that place when you played games there?  :)

I used to ride my skateboard down there from Gardena. Man that was an all day job. I actually made the trip down there yesterday because I had a hankerin for some Zeppy's Pizza. Nex time I'm in the South Bay, I'll have to take a trip to Castle Park's arcade.

As far as what it used to be like, it seemed to be pretty much the same. I remember there being way more games(but it could just be one of those memory things). It was always jam packed and they still had the Rides and other amusements (fortune teller machines, puppet show machines, rides, etc.). I remember that arcade as being the one that had Space Ace. There were 2 arcades at the Pier, the other one was underground and was much cleaner.

I loved that place!

Do you remember The Underground arcade on the other end of the pier, about 15-16 years ago or so?

(Edit: rereads your last post)

I guess you do!  I loved both places....

wow almost brings tears to my eyes to see the old arcade still running. I remember the old pier before it burned down and the constant smell of stinky fish, old beer and ocean smell when you walked through the parking lot.   Did you go to the area where they had fresh crab and you ate on picnic benches and newspaper.  WOw and the boat ride, go out about 2 miles and get sick from the horrible smell and the only thing you saw was the seals on the rocks.. thanks for the pics.

As soon as I got out of the car it was 1983 and I was 10 years old again. The parking lot still smells exactly the way you describe it. I walked around the whole pier and a lot of the old businesses are still there. The Hotdog on the stick and the chinese food place next to it, Tony's, that little shop with the churros and Zeppy's which is my favorite. I'm planing on going down there with my sister tomorrow, if you want I can snap some pics of the pier so you can see what it looks like now.

Funny to see the Hercule's pinball machines. I was just up on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls and there is a Guiness World Records attraction that has a playable Hercules there as "Worlds Largest Pinball Game". I had never seen one, and didn't know if it was a regular machine or not.

they don't have arcades like that here in the uk any more.  all arcades inland have only fruit machines and arcades near the coast have a mixture of fruit machines and driving games/dancing games. no classics anywhere these days   :'(

no it is part of the attraction it is like a "FAIR" where you just walk around enjoy the sea air and the sounds of the rides and games being played.

Canobie Lake park, NH has a working Hercules... well it works well enough. I wish Arcades were still dark and dingy. Funspot did well holing true to that.

I'll have to head up there in the coming weeks... glad to see they still have it.  Is it still near that weird bingo hall?

Man I wish that Hercules at Salisbury Beach had found some love.
