Can I mount my 49-way the wrong way?

I think you're SOL, unless you can map the directions in reverse in MAME.

That's what I thought, thanks

It may be POSSIBLE to do some creative cross-wiring to the interface, and get it to switch directions.
It's something you'd have to play with though.

I haven't tried this, so I'm not sure if it's possible. But whatever you do, don't experiment while the device is powered. I have a strong feeling that the joystick could be damaged if you do.
If you want to experiment like that. pull the USB plug, wait a couple seconds and then wire it before plugging it back in.
Better safe than sorry :)

I maybe should have mentioned that in my original post.
My guess is that, if you can get it to read the sensors in order for each axis, you should be able to change the orientation of that axis.
I knew that getting the sensors out of order shouldn't hurt because the interface is simply reading the state of each sensor.
If the sensors are completely out of order, it SHOULD just cause the cursor to jump around.
I didn't think about the possibility of someone trying it with the interface under power.
Proceed at your own risk.
