Why Galaga PCBs so expensive?
« on: May 27, 2005, 10:47:28 am »
I have noticed that Galaga pcbs seem to command premium prices. But why?

I assume this is because they are still good money makers in commercial situation?

You are correct.  Despite being one of the most manufactured boards, they command high prices due to their demand.  Since the market supports it, people will pay it.

Same with Pac-Man and Ms.Pac.  Why do you think Namco released the Ms.Pac/Galaga reunion machine?

Pac prices have fallen over the last year to 2 years. Ms.Pac has fallen a bit less (same board, different chips+daughter board).  Pacs used to guarentee $200-$225 and Ms.Pacs $225-$250.

Now Pac-s are about $125 to $150 tops depending on condition, while Ms.Pacs are still about $175 to $200.

I need a Galaga board set.. I have tons of extra Pac's.. I wish I could trade a working Pac for a working Galaga, but doubt that will happen :(

Seeing as how either could be done in a single chip now, how prevalent are boots?

Speak and ye shall receive... Have been looking for a killer price on an authentic midway galaga pcb and I found one today momemts after I posted that last message!  Finally my Galaga cabinet i found on the side of the road (with great side art) can come alive!

I need to get the wire harness however... otherwise I have everything else i need I think.  Anyone have a cheap wire harness available?

I've got something cheaper, although it's still a Mame solution...

Get yourself a Delhi III motherboard.  They came in eMachines.  On eBay all the time.

There are DOS drivers for the sound, and there are onboard ATI graphics with non-shared memory.

Get a 16M flash card, with an IDE flash reader.  Set up DOS on it, with the sound drivers, and have it boot right to Mame and Galaga.

This board runs Galaga @ full FPS with a 450 MHz processor.  And with .96u3 it's darned close to the real thing.  In fact, with the newest version I'm not sure what the difference is between Mame and a real board.

Thanks guys, but I require the original system and original (or at least redone to original) wiring harness.. I dont want to convert it to Jamma or mame it...

I got into mame, but have much more fun restoring classics... I still havn't built a mame and probably never will.. I just use it to test games out before I buy them now :)

You know, I have one of these sitting 8 feet from me, 533mhz I believe.

Yeah?  Check it and make sure the specs I mentioned above are inside.
