How many people should bet their lives on that being only theoretical, given that the data is probably a tiny fraction of known cases, and a tiny tiny fraction of total cases (documented and undocumented)?

This isn't malaria or something you can cure, this is a guaranteed long and drawn out death.

I sure wouldn't want to be the first...

I wouldn't plan a sex trip to Bangkok.  But when I mentioned everyone acted as if I was crazy and that it happens all the time.  It doesn't.  I'm not nuts.  It was an educated point, that's all.

There's no way that chick gave that guy HIV.  Odds are too crazy.

Bad example. Malaria is incurable. On that note, so is herpes and you can get that from oral sex VERY easily.

From CDC.gov:

--- Code: --- If I get malaria, will I have it for the rest of my life?

No, not necessarily. Malaria can be treated. If the right drugs are used, people who have malaria can be cured and all the malaria parasites can be eliminated.

<stuff snipped for brevity>

...if you are correctly treated for malaria, the parasites are eliminated and you are no longer infected with malaria.

--- End code ---

Also note, Herpes is not fatal.
