That one looks like 3/4" particle board.

My quick opinion is that it is not a Nintendo cabinet at all, coin door is all wrong for Nintendo as well, Nintendo had those large single door setups, not an over/under. The Nintendo plate is probably left over from a previous Vs. System conversion.

There is no speaker grill on the control panel either.

This cabinet has had various parts replaced.  Judging by the cabinet's construction, the bottom was replaced with OSB and the front panel with the coin door looks to be MDF whereas the sides are plywood.  Also the coin door is WAY too shiny to be as old as the cabinet itself so I think it's new too.  The corner protectors are another giveaway to replacement parts.  There's missing wood and the part that's very close to that looks slightly water damaged.  Is there supposed to be a speaker grille on the control panel?

Not on R-Type, which is the cabinet you have (which is late 80s, not early 80s). The cabinet looked familiar right away, but I was just pointing out all the reasons why it wasn't a Donkey Kong. Then I went with my hunch and looked up a dedicated R-Type and found your cabinet staring back at me.

Coin doors are very seldom replaced. Yours probably just held up well. I own (and have owned) 30+ year old coin doors that still looked brand new.

Where did you buy that? I saw a NEO-GEO that looked exactly like that one in Tulsa not long ago.

Looks somewhat like a single monitor playchoice-10 cab if I remember correctly.
