Finished the book and found it to be a great source for a newbie like me.

You use an empty button space and just use the programmer so that (your button) will perform the PAUSE function.  IE :  If you wire Pause to P4B5 then you just program Player 4's fifth button to act as pause, and then place it accordingly.

I'm getting to this point too, so it was helpful to hear the answer on how to wire it for me also.

Is it just a matter of preference where one places the administrative buttons?  My wife and I were talking about that last night and she was thinking top of the control panel, but I wonder...does that take away from the authenticity too much?

That's certainly an individual preference thing, as far as the authenticity. The one thing I'd suggest considering is placing them where they won't get accidentally pressed. Nothing quite as aggravating as leaning against the "exit" button when you're nearing a high score!

I'm thinking of placing my admin buttons inside my coin door.
I'm making a Project Arcade cab.

Yes.. I would also unprogram the P1/P2 Start button exit as well.

Although it's not authentic, I can tell you that the Pause button is definately something I like having up on the panel.

I placed my admin buttons on the front of the base on the CP.  They are both out of the way and easy to access at the same time.  Definatly include a pause and escape on your CP.
