Pretty much, yes. Basically they're what you'd get if you took a subwoofer's voice coil, and attached it to a weight instead of a speaker cone. In a car I think you still need a mid bass speaker, but a Bass shaker can give you the deep bass you feel more than hear. The biggest plus is they only need a 25 watt per channel amp, to get the equalivent bass out of a sub you need 3 or 4 times that power for the same effect.

The only way I would put them in an upright is if there was a little platform to stand on when playing. I bought mine from parts express too. I am going to power them with a plate amp for a sub they also have listed for $49. That way I can control the gain for just the shakers if I want them off or lowered. Get the "pro" models you will kick yourself if you don't. I actually have both sets and the pro model is built so much better. There is a small amount of music that does come from the shakers but with any speaker you wont be able to hear it.
