I believe those are actually speaker holes. The one's just above the control panel, right?

In2ishun is right. The holes are for speakers.

Anybody who brings a drink near my finished cab will be beaten with great vengeance and furious anger.

Why hasn't anyone tried building with pre laminated mdf ( Kitchen Cupboard Stuff? )

Because unless you use the right tools, the stuff tends to chip on the edges quite easily.  Even if you DO use the right tools, it still can happen. 

Laminating after cutting your parts out requires the right tools as well, but you're not locked in to the colors they have in stock, although there's a better than average chance that NO ONE needs any color other than the stock stuff, so that might be a wash.

Price is also another consideration, although your area may be different than mine.  A sheet of MDO (that's what they call the stuff I believe you to be talking about) is $10 more per sheet by me, and it's also heavier than even a sheet of standard heavy-ass MDF
