It would be a side-scolling shooter with 2 player co-op and bosses so big that they fill up 2/3 of the screen. It would be 100% compatable with Mame cabinets. You'd even press the 5 key to insert coins, and 1 would be the start button, so you could play it just like a Mame ROM. It sounds awesome, I can't wait till he starts on it. He's currently working on another game called "Chaos Gate". You may have heard of it, I don't know. It's looking pretty cool as well. If I tried to describe it though it'd probably take several pages since it combines so many genres. --- End quote --- I was envisioning a side scroller with the American flag as the sideart and red and blue joysticks and buttons, with white stars on the bezel, and a marquee saying "Real American Guns" or something... Lol... Maybe i'm just a tad psychotic... |

This above problem is not only in the arcades but in the console world also. I understand that if a game made a killing, a sequel is probably the smart thing to do but come on some of these games are "squealed" to death. I do know however that there are a lot of the "little guys" out there that have some FANTASTIC games, developed without a multimillion dollar budget. Imagine some of these as "new" arcade cabs. And wouldn't there be a market for them? Seems to me that the 18-40 yr old males who play games would like this stuff. And frankly, in my area at least, there seems to be an increase in the arcade game platform. I'm seeing new & old machines popping up all over. Maybe I'm paying more attention or maybe I'm just prejudiced or maybe......the want is there. Retro is in ya know ;) And I just had another thought. Do any of you think that games have plateaued? I mean really whats the next big step gonna be? Actual 3D? Or some kind of Star Trek Holodeck? Has hardware peaked for the time being? |

The next big step is physics, though I don't think we'll see that revolution so much in the next gen consoles as we will in the generation AFTER that. Chip designers are right now designing what they call PPUs (Physics Processing Units). So now, asides from the CPU, and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit--which gave us a 3D revolution) we will see more and more realistic physical simulation to go with the realistic graphics. (While one can argue that we already have physics in games, the fact is only the best developers are "doing it right". San Andreas has great car physics, while Mercenaries, a very similar type of game, just doesn't quite cut it. Once the complicated parts of physics simulation becomes part of the hardware, that will free up developers to concentrate a little more on how to use it, rather than how to program it.) Online persistent worlds will continue to be expanded on and will move more and more into mainstream subject matter. More and more "realistic" double-life type of worlds. (Simulations) The idea of "instant-on" interaction with others will move forward (ie: wireless handhelds. The idea that you can turn on your Nintendo DS-2 and instantly find people to challenge without needing to set up anything, or worry about lag). Personal avatars will become a big thing (5 to 20 years from now?). Imagine that instead of a stupid GIF on this message board, you instead had a unique character, with abilities, experience and equipment. And imagine that this avatar "follows" you wherever you interact (ie: same avatar on different message boards. Links to your avatar in chats, and while browsing the web...). The idea here is taking the experience outside of specific worlds, and into one's everyday interactions. It would be really cool if a variety of environments by a variety of authors opened up, all compatible with these "universal" avatars. |

This isn't Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate is it?? |
