Cab collectors - How not to injure yourself?
« on: February 25, 2005, 04:52:49 pm »
As I age, I notice my back can't take as much as it used to. Moving cabs to the basement is very difficult. I used to just thump it down one stair at a time on a small dolly. So I read up on what better dolly to use and everyone said to get one with stair belts. So I bought an appliance dolly.

The problem with this kind of dolly though is that first of all, it's heavy all by itself, so it's in effect adding about 40 lbs of weight to the job. Second, the stair belts basically create zero resitance! With a standard dolly, the wheels on each stair help stop the cab's movement down the stairs (thump thump thump!). Withthe stiar belts, the only resistance now is ME. I need to have the strength to hold the dolly and the cab from sliding down all the stairs!

So last time I moved a cab down, I didn't hurt my back, but I really felt I was pushing my limits.

What can I do to prevent injury? I know one step is removing the monitor. What else?

Hit the gym.  Reduce the effort of moving a cab by increasing your strength.

lol.

I fell jumping off a retaining wall on my bike and folded my foot backwards.  It took the doctors 2 months to figure out I broke my leg and they had me in physical therapy during that time (which kept it broken).  Now I've got all kinds of complications.  I've kind of been screwing myself up physically all my life.  I have a disc that's out of place in my back, my left arm hangs lower than the right (I tried tearing it off), part of a kneecap is gouged out, I have no feeling in most of one big toe and part of one shoulder, etc etc.  I've had every drug a doctor can prescribe at some point in my life.  I've even gone for surgery while still recovering from the last.  That's how I know how RayB feels, I've spent a good part of my life not being able to doing things myself.  Best thing to do is just ask for help.

Life is short.  Play hard. ;)

Healthy enough for the next "challenge".  As long as I can still shift, I'm good. ;)

Hey RayB, do you have anyone living close by that's into this?  Invite them over to help.  Plus you might score some extra parts.  Nothing else, recruit someone into the hobby and buy their parts at a reduced cost if they back out.  Heheh.

Frankly, I think Ken's solution is the one for me.  I too have problems moving my 300+ lb Konami cabinet.  It was originally going upstairs but I had such a problem just getting it from the garage to the ground floor (up 3 steps) that it's staying there for the unforseeable future.

I'm not a big guy and I don't have any arcade-oriented friends whose arms I can twist.  At some point I can get help to move it, but it'll be a process of organizing schedules etc to get people over to my house to help me move it so it's not going to be a spur-of-the-moment move.

I don't have *significant* back problems but my wife does and in my mid-thirties my back just can't take it.  I was tweaked out for about 2-weeks after moving the cab into the house and mounting the 21" computer monitor in it.

I hate to say this (for fear that my wife might read it) but I'm thinking that a cabaret cab would have been a better decision than the cab I've got.    I've already been working on my own BYO-cabaret plans in my head even though my current cab is nowhere near being finished.

Something I've seen professional movers use - a big honkin' belt/strap similar to the kind that should be on your appliance dolly.

They make a big loop of it, and hook it around themselves to use the rest of their body as a counterweight.

I just tried helping move a freezer using that technique.  The thing would be heavy as all get out for two guys to lift from the ground, I could get it up 4 steps by myself with just the straps, and it wasn't difficult at all.  The freezer's weight, however, wouldn't allow the maneuvering all the way up and around the corner.

We're contemplating taking a sawzall to it.  Has anyone ever cut a line on a freezer (the one that holds refrigerant)?  We were told a small hole would let the air out and possibly some of the "black goo" inside.....kinda skeered.  Me, I'm looking forward to it! ;D

I cut the line on an air-conditioner once before.  If you have to do it, do it and RUN.  You don't want to breathing that crap (and freezing your lungs).

RayB,

I'm 43.  I avoid pain by using my brain. Better equipment, or pay somebody.  Use floor moving pads to push games around. They call them "moving men".  Get some carpet pieces to help you slide them.  By all means, don't try and lift them yourself or by yourself.

Going down stairs is a dangerous proposition by yourself.  make a piece of plywood and attach carpet behind it with staple gun.  Lay the machine down on it and then pull it down the stairs.  Stay in front of it and take your time.

But if you can, make new friends that can help, because there will be some you can't move at all by yourself.

I have permission to install a removeable block and tackle set into our next house--I told her its so i can lug the washer/dryer/freezer into the basement too  ;)

This way i can put the machine on a dolly, hook it up and lower it down the stairs.  Just have to make sure I attach it to a stud (other than me  :D)

Seems like you would be able to strap it up and wench it downstairs slowly on pieces of plywood .... although if you do not have straps or a wench, then that might not work for you.

Moving a heavy object that you are not strong enough to control downstairs by being underneath it in any way is stupid and Darwinian.

Strap it HARD to a dolly, stay behind it, and just let it down one step at a time from above.  NEVER lose control of it.  If you lose it, just let go, a damaged cab is better than a damaged cab AND a permanently injured back.

OK based on the advice here, I think this is what I'm going to do:

1. I'll park the cab somewhere in the living room and tell the woman it's temporary.
2. I'll join a gym and work out until the woman gets really fed up of the cab being in the living room, and demands I move it.
3. I'll still put a mattress at the bottom of the stairs.
4. I'll strap the cab to a good dolly and strap myself to it.
5. I'll stay behind the cab and also in front of the cab.
6. I'll ease the cab down, and eventually let it go.

Probably your cheapest and easiest solution is to just clone yourself and help yourself.

Every other solution is just going to end up costing you money in the long run.  Money you thought you had, but when cost overruns are factored into it, you'll have spent more than cloning yourself.

Or clone your wench.  ;D

Actually, there's another step.  When you're muscular enough to move the cab, and the woman is fed up with it being there, take your shirt off and show the woman your new hugerippedness.  She will forget about the cab.  Trust me.

Unless of course the woman is your mom.  That's just wrong.

I never, ever, ever use dollies to move games up and down stairs. The dollies just bounce the games around, and the furniture dollies might be smooth, but it is still essentially just sliding the sucker down the steps at that point. If I am doing that I might as well just slide the game down the steps on it's back, less likely go get away from me that way.

My normal method of doing stairs is to pull the monitor from the cabinet, move the monitor down the stairs, and then get someone else to help me with the cabinet. They are a lot lighter without the monitor, and thus much easier to move (unless it is an atari cabinet, in which case it is going to be heavy and have no place to grab no matter how you do it).

I have also (on a few occasions) SOMEHOW managed to move an entire game into or out of my second floor apartment by myself with no assistance. I can only do it with plywood cabs though, and I have to take all the weight out of them first. A bare plywood cab is way under 100 lbs, and can be handled by one guy, it is just awkward.

Not if you know how to use a dolly and control it properly.  I do this all the time and have only had a problem once, with an odd shaped cocktail cab that didn't want to fit through the door until I dollied it down AND rotated it in a cramped stairwell.  The dolly is probably the safest method for one average strength man to do this alone.  If he had a friend to help him he wouldn't have posted here.

manutention. chadtower will know what this is (even if only subsciously and NOT just because its a french word!). it was developed by a french physio for the french powerlifting team. it was then adapted by nurses who as you can imagine have to move awkward, heavy weights (im guessing broken bones will know this).

basically its the art of NOT lifting things. MOVE, dont lift could be the motto. i did a little course ages ago and by the end all of us (including some small women) were hoisting 17kg concrete filled witches hats onto our shoulders with ease.

edit: having said that, one of the best things to do would definitely be to have someone else help. give them one free credit for their troubles  ;D
