Dragon's den sideart looks horrible?

I was looking around at dragon den's selection of sideart and when both the thumbnails and the images when I download them look HIDEOUS.

The colors look terrible, it resembles something that was painted with little attempt to make the colors blend (i.e. there are patches of color that usually you can make out what it is, but it looks ugly).

I'm using xp, any ideas what would cause this or do the images just look that way?

The images look that way to me too but there is a mention on one of the pages that the downloadable WMF format looks *much* better than what is pictured.
