what luck Saturday
« on: January 09, 2005, 05:01:12 pm »
O.K. I thought I'd change out the lift support arms that hold the back window up on the wifes station wagon because the old ones weren't doing the job to well. So I took the old ones off and was putting on the new ones when her back window shatered on me :o. Luckely no major cuts on my me. Now I've had to call to try to find a new back window

How'd it happen?  Did the window drop or tightened too much or what?

Hat or no hat, I'll bet you've still got a bruised melon. I busted a window on a customer's car once when I was working for a towing company (Contours are a PITA to do an unlock on), I heard the tool chip the bottom of the glass and that was all she wrote....POW! Shattered safety glass everywhere, what a mess.

How old is the wagon? If it is at least 10 years old you can just go to the junkyard and get a complete tailgate/back window/whatever for cheaper than the glass shop will charge you for the piece of glass.

Heck, if the wagon is old enough then you can get a complete parts car for less.

You don't live in New England, do you?  By the time a car is 8 years old here, it's structurally unsound, having been eaten from the underneath.  Cars that are ten years old here are DONE.

BTW, dude, that's not bad luck, that's good luck.  You were hit in the head by a heavy, blunt object and weren't injured.

Gotta agree with the man there.  Not only a heavy object, but one that could have cut you a lot!

I am curious, though...didn't you prop up the window, or were you relying on one hydraulic support to keep the whole thing up?

Is that the square one or the round one? If it is the older squarish body style then you should be able to get glass out of a much older unit.

yes, 21 years ago a ten year old car was ok. but a car that is NOW ten years old just isnt the same as a ten year old car 21 years ago. i myself have a 1973 model car which ive owned for 13 odd years so i know what you mean. but newer cars are much more disposable. i don't necessarily think thats a bad thing either, but i wouldnt own a new car more than 5 years nowadays...

Heck, I've owned five cars over the past 20 years. Never owned any single one more than 5 years MAX! They always seem to break down BIG time (i.e., tranny problems, seized cylinders etc) right after the warranty has expired  :o. Methinks these problems are engineered into the car to begin with.

My daily driver is a 1994 Geo Prizm SE.  I have had it for two years now, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

My previous car was 1991 Isuzu Amigo XS.  I drove it for 11 years and it was still going strong.  I was starting to show some rust.  I finally decided to get rid of it because my wife can't drive stick shift, and it really wasn't very good for transporting children.

I live in Chicago, so I know all about the damage road salt can do.  If you take care of a car properly, it will last a long time.

UPDATE: The new window is in and the wifes not as mad

btw my daily driver is a 1987 Ford Bronco and I can fit a Cab in there :D

You failed to mention in the "am I an addict" thread that you have a cab in your car.....hiding your obsession is NOT the way to overcome your addiction, and if you are at the point where you must game on the go, you're soon bound  to require thumb replacement or skin transplant where the buttons wear it off.

Gentlemen, I think he requires an intervention.  Let's all share phone numbers and have each others' wives call each other, as none of us are qualified and will only argue over who gets to take his cabs to "help" him out....the wives are better qualified to get him the help he needs.  Who's with me on this one?

I can fit a cab in there not have a cab in there............

hmmmmmmmm but wait....perhaps this might work...

If I was to get a power inverter to tranform my 12v DC battery into 110v AC I could possibly build a cab to put in there and have games on the go :o

There you guys go - in front of your very own eyes, he's backtracking already....but if you look carefully, class, he had ideas at his fingertips to "try to get it to work".

I next point you to the limo tint on the windows he applied to hide his addiction.  Shamed into hiding, his addiction will only worsen.  Jabba, thank you for your pledge of assistance.  We'll be needing all the help we can muster for this case.  He seems like he'll be a tough nut to crack.

Missioncontrol, c'mon buddy....put down the crimper for a second....we only want to talk.....we won't hurt you a bit, we're only here to help.....you didn't accidentally slam that window on a cabinet you were trying to fit in there did you?  Are you cut, hurt, anything?

Here buddy, try on this new white jacket we got you...yeah, theeeerrrrrrrrrree you go buddy....isn't that nice.....nice missioncontrol, niiiiiiiiiice.....this is one of those new ones that buckle in the BACK instead of the front! Hey, this seems a little tight, can you cross your arms for me buddy?  yeah...there....wait....oof....ergh....AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, HE'S LOOSE, EVERYONE RUN FOR YOUR LIVES RUN!

Was a 1973 Type 3 VW notch back. I painted it with household enamel paint using high density foam rollers, ala $50 paint job.
