Extending the control panel?
jonm:
Hey all, I just got the book a couple of days ago and have read about 2/3 of it. It is excellently written and full of tons of information! This is one of the best books I've read in the last few years.
Anyway, I want to build that same basic model as in the book, except I want to extend the control panel (say another 8 inches wider) to accomodate a 4 player setup. Does anyone see any problem with this? (except that the controlbox will have to be detachable if I ever want to get it through a door). Also, I'm thinking of using a 25"-27" TV instead of an expensive computer monitor, any ideas on what would be a good card with a s-video out?

One of the best??? It's my favorite of all time!!! :P But then again I'm not exactly a scholar. I thought 'The Mouse and the Motorcycle' was pretty good too, but, come to think of it, I think that's the only other book I've ever read.
Just don't make your CP too wide - remember you're making an arcade cabinet not a plane. If you want some examples of a 24" RCA TV via S-vid using a 128mb PNY w/NVidia drivers, check out my web page. I'll say it again, tho - the digital pics really don't do the real deal justice.
Post some pics!

Your in luck I did the exact same thing to my Project Arcade Cab. I extended it out to 42 inches base to accomidate 4 players. I think it turned out well. Hopefully it doesn't have that airplane feel ;).
Take a look

Wow - the bug bit you good! 4 cabinets? If I did that I thnk my wife would've called the guys in the white suits. Curious - why no trackball? What do you use as a mouse control? Is there a hidden keyboard?
Nice cabinet!

Time Pilot is my all time favorite! :)
MAMEWAH is the interface, so no mouse is really needed. Plus I don't play much trackball games so it suits me good. Everything opens up if I need to break out the keyboard or mouse.
