Any Authentic Home Game Rooms?
« on: January 06, 2005, 04:40:38 pm »
Has anyone dedicated a room in their house to an authentic arcade or game room (I'm sure someone has...)?   If possible, pictures would be nice.

Yeah.  I had a little addiction problem for a while...  Here is some of my basement.  And just think, the original plan was just an air hockey table and a pool table.  Now, what I wanted the most, doesn't fit.

I am also the BIGGEST procrastinating packrat.  Here is a bad pic of my "things I am gonna do tomorrow" room.  You can't even see the good ones, the 4p NBA Jam, needs a cap kit,(dedicated).  Dedicated tron, needs power conversion,(anybody wanna do this for me????????????).  And about 10 jamma boards on the floor.

Not to mention the 2 monsters in the garage that don't fit through the basement door.(X-men 6p, and 25"/27" viper phase one!

Also, Raiden being my FAV, the raiden cab in my last post has R1 and R2 boards in it.  Just have to switch the jamma connector.

MAME cabinetS, (yes, plural) are on the tomorrow list.  Being  a carpenter, they should be a quickie for me,  If I can get my lazy --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- to clean the garage to work in and get started. (See procrastination in above post)

 PS-  Have 2 mame "computers"....

whoa!  I mentioned building a gameroom to my wife & she almost sounded interested.  So...down to business.  I've drawn up some preliminary room designs below.  Is this really going to happen?  We'll see.  Lot's of planning first to see what I'm getting into.  Completion would probably be @1yr or more away as I would do most of the work myself, except building the new garage.

Check these gameroom arrangements out & provide feedback - good, bad & ugly.  My whizbang math tells me I should be able do this (including the new 20 x 20 garage) for a little over 20k.  Like I said, I'll do most of the work myself (insulate, sheet rock, paint, build the snack bar, booths, and mame cabs of course!).

I didn't want a pure arcade.  Don't get me wrong - I love what Peter Hirschburg did (absolutely amazing) but I'm looking for more variety.  I've got 3 boys & while they enjoy mame, they also like b-ball, pinball, pool, foosball, air hockey...so instead of filling the room with all vid games, I'll put a mix of stuff in.

And taking a cue from Peter, I'd definately want it to look like an 80's arcade.  This includes black light carpeting, dark colored walls w/black light designs, TV's playing 80's videos/movies, 80's music playing...

Even if we don't do it, it's been fun putting these plans together!

If you are going to build a agarage to make into a game room, you can't set any plans down for layout now.  It is alot easier if you can stand in it empty and deceide where you want things to go.  And after they are all in there, you will probably move them all around again.  I have rearranged mine many times.  Even had to add electric outlets.(pain in ass after rocked and painted.)  I even moved walls twice over the years.  I framed, insulated, wired (elec, phone, cable),  rocked and painted the tomorrow room by mtself in about 4 days.  Notice only 1 coat of spackle.  I just needed a little of my own space real bad.  The other room was done twice. Due to remodeling the walls and ceiling had to be ripped out to reinforce the frame.  While the rock was off, I deceided to take down a wall, and move another.  The only point I am trying to make here, is things look REALLY DIFFERENT on paper.  Having a planned layout is great.  Just don't think it will look the same when its done, and you are standing IN THE MIDDLE of it.  Build the garage as big as you can afford or get a permit for.  It would be SO MUCH BETTER to have extra space then to ALWAYS wish you had a little more.

Thanks for the feedback.  Land of the Lost?  Lost what....$20k?   :)

Our street name is Obscurity, that's where the name came from.  I'm sure it'll change again before all is said & done.

Stevejt - I wish I had your skills!  Sounds like you were able to knock a lot out in 4 days.  All that would take me (and my father in law) a week, probably much longer!  That's ok - I really enjoy building stuff, even if it takes a while.  I agree about the planning, but I needed to know realistically what we could fit in a 20x20 space.  While the plans are very rough, it is somewhat to scale.  Wasn't sure what I could fit in that size space, and I agree, if possible, we'll make it bigger than 20x20.   That's really not as big as it seems.  It's all still very preliminary.

Heck, maybe we could start having kids parties in there (for a small fee, of course!).  That would help offset some of the expense over time...hmmm....well, I need to rationalize this somehow.  Pass that bottle back over here...

Land of the Lost?  Lost what....$20k?

I live in NY, where everything is OVERPRICED.  I see ads in the penny saver, and other small local papers for a 24x24 garage completed for $16k.  I am thinking about haveing one just framed myself.  For $20k, you should be able to do better than 20x20.  Like I said, go for the bigger garage, that is the ONLY thing you can't change later.  And on everything fitting, is very different that liking it when you are in the middle.  The area always looks SO MUCH smaller when you are standing between 2 machines, or whatever.

What ever you do, good luck!!!  And remember, it only has to make YOU and your family happy!  Doesn't really matter what the rest of us think.

You also need to let everyone you ever come in contact with know that you're a game collector. Sure, most people will think you're a big dork, but I;ve heard many stories of "people who knew people who heard someone had a machine to get rid of" and the "dork" ends up getting contacted... ;-)

Most people I know already know.  And dork is only one of the things people think.  Guys usually like the game room.  Kids LOVE it.  A few guys say I should have just got an xbox.  Women usually look at me like I am crazy.  And say why?  I guess to them a $500 necklace is a much better investment than 2 or 3 arcade games.  I mean hey, they get to wear it like 3 or 4 times a year for hours at a time.  Some peole just don't understand "each to his own".  And I guess an xbox would be real cool at a party, (as long as there was only 2 people there).

Each to his own.

Steve

PS-  everybody (that has NO games of their own), always says "you SHOULD have got <insert the only game they know/like>".  I usually say somebody offered me one for free, but i just didn't want it.

I always get the impression people think I've got Peter Pan syndrome, cuz I'm into "kid stuff" like games, instead of modding my car, or watching a bunch of guys throw a ball around on TV... (I am 34 after all. ;-) )

I know how you feel.  Never heard it called the PPS though.  I gave up on expensive car radios a long time ago.  And never enjoyed watching other people play sports.  Can't get tired of video games though.  Also have alot of other things I collect, that most people think I am nuts/immature/weird/etc for having.

Like I said, each to his own.

Building MAME cabs is the only thing I've found that combins the 3 things I love doing....

1. Messing with computers and circuits.
2. Working with my hands.
3. Art.

I wish I had the space for a game room.  My cab is currently taking up a good chunk of my dining room.  Then my old comic book collection is taking another big chunk of the same room. ::)  My dining table is currently the home of my T-Maxx. ;D
Oh, by the way, I hear the bit about being an overgrown kid once in a while too.  I'm 33 :o :o

Steve, you should add an xbox to your arsenal.  Sometimes it is nice to relax on the couch when you want to game.
