I have a question about the attachment of the cabinet sides to the base.

Not sure of the primary cabinet materials you are using but my upright is constructed from MDF.

Every joint in that cabinet, side/side, side to top, side to base, internal shelves to sides, etc is reinforced with 1x2 ledgers attached with wood glue and then wood screws.
